First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Move the exposed person to fresh air at once. When breathing is difficult, properly trained personnel may assist affected person by administering oxygen. Get medical attention.

Symptoms: Vapours may cause headache, fatigue, dizziness and nausea.

Skin contact

Remove affected person from source of contamination. Remove contaminated clothing immediately and wash skin with soap and water.

Symptoms: Prolonged contact may cause redness, irritation and dry skin.

Eye contact

Promptly wash eyes with plenty of water while lifting the eye lids. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention promptly if symptoms occur after washing.

Symptoms: May cause severe irritation to eyes.

Ingestion

NEVER MAKE AN UNCONSCIOUS PERSON VOMIT OR DRINK FLUIDS! If vomiting occurs, keep head low so that stomach content doesn't get into the lungs. Get medical attention.

Symptoms: May cause stomach pain or vomiting. Drowsiness, dizziness, disorientation, vertigo.

Immediate Medical Attention

Get medical attention.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Water spray, fog or mist. Foam. Carbon dioxide (CO2). Dry chemicals, sand, dolomite etc.

Unsuitable media

Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.

Specific hazards

Oxidizes readily in air to unstable peroxides that may explode spontaneously. May explode when heated or when exposed to flames or sparks. May travel considerable distance to source of ignition and flash back.

Instructions

Move container from fire area if it can be done without risk. Cool containers exposed to flames with water until well after the fire is out. For massive fire in cargo area, use unmanned hose holder or monitor nozzles, if possible. If not, withdraw and let fire burn out.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Ventilate well, stop flow of gas or liquid if possible. Avoid contact with skin or inhalation of spillage, dust or vapour.

Large spill

Prevent discharge of larger quantity to drain.

Environmental

Do not discharge into drains, water courses or onto the ground.

Cleanup methods

Absorb spillage with non-combustible, absorbent material.

Materials: non-combustible, absorbent material

07

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Avoid spilling, skin and eye contact. Ventilate well, avoid breathing vapours. Use approved respirator if air contamination is above accepted level.

Storage

Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Store in a cool and well-ventilated place.

Hygiene

Avoid spilling, skin and eye contact.

Fire prevention

Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Ground container and transfer equipment to eliminate static electric sparks.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Provide adequate general and local exhaust ventilation.

Hands

For exposure of 4 to 8 hours use gloves made of: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). P.T.F.E (Teflon).

Eyes

Wear approved chemical safety goggles where eye exposure is reasonably probable.

Skin/Body

Wear appropriate clothing to prevent any possibility of skin contact.
