First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove affected person from source of contamination. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

Symptoms: Gas or vapour in high concentrations may irritate the respiratory system.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothing immediately and wash skin with soap and water. Get medical attention immediately.

Symptoms: May cause serious chemical burns to the skin.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water. Remove any contact lenses and open eyelids wide apart. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention immediately. Continue to rinse.

Symptoms: Causes serious eye damage. May cause permanent damage if eye is not immediately irrigated.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, the head should be kept low so that stomach vomit doesn't enter the lungs. Give plenty of water to drink. Get medical attention immediately.

Cleanup methods

Neutralise spilled material with crushed limestone, slaked lime (calcium hydroxide), soda ash (sodium carbonate) or sodium bicarbonate. Absorb spillage with inert, damp, non-combustible material. Flush contaminated area with plenty of water. Collect and place in suitable waste disposal containers and seal securely.
