First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

If breathed in, move person into fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Consult a physician.

Symptoms: Zinc oxide dust or fume can irritate the respiratory tract. Coughing, metallic taste, marked thirst, fatigue, weakness, muscular pain, fever, chills. Severe overexposure may result in bronchitis or pneumonia. Cough, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, airway resistance, pulmonary edema.

Skin contact

Wash off with soap and plenty of water. Consult a physician.

Symptoms: Prolonged skin contact can produce a severe dermatitis called oxide pox. Bluish tint to the skin. Burning sensation.

Eye contact

Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and consult a physician.

Ingestion

Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Rinse mouth with water. Consult a physician.

Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, metallic taste, marked thirst, fatigue, weakness, muscular pain, fever, chills.
