First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Take the casualty into the fresh air and keep warm. Irregular breathing/no breathing: artificial respiration. Call a physician.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash away with soap and water and rinse. Do NOT use solvents or thinners.

Eye contact

Contact lenses should be removed. Flush with plenty of water ( 10 - 15 min. ) holding the eyelids apart and seek medical advice.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth and give water. If accidentally swallowed obtain immediate medical attention. Keep patient at rest. Do not induce vomiting.

In all cases of doubt, or when symptoms persist, seek medical attention. Call a physician. Seek medical advice. If accidentally swallowed obtain immediate medical attention.

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Specific hazards

Fire will produce dense black smoke containing hazardous products of combustion ( see Section 10). Decomposition products may be a hazard to health.

Instructions

Cool closed containers exposed to fire with water spray.

Appropriate self-contained breathing apparatus may be required.

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors. Prevent the creation of flammable or explosive concentrations of vapour in air and avoid vapour concentration higher than the occupational exposure limits. Keep the container tightly closed. Avoid skin and eye contact. Avoid inhalation of vapour and spray mist. Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in areas of storage and use. Never use pressure to empty; the container is not a pressure vessel. Always keep in containers made of the same material as the supply container.

Storage

Store in a dry, well ventilated place away from sources of heat, ignition and direct sunlight. No smoking. Prevent unauthorized access. Containers which are opened should be properly resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.

Hygiene

Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in areas of storage and use.

Fire prevention

Exclude sources of heat, sparks and open flame. Non-sparking tools should be used. Good housekeeping standards and regular safe removal of waste material will minimize risks of spontaneous combustion and other fire hazards.

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Provide adequate ventilation. Where reasonably practicable this should be achieved by the use of local exhaust ventilation and good general extraction.

Respiratory

If these are not sufficient to maintain concentrations of particulates and/or solvent vapour below the OEL, suitable respiratory protections must be worn.
