First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Move to fresh air. Oxygen or artificial respiration if needed. Do not use mouth-to-mouth method if victim inhaled the substance. Call a physician or poison control centre immediately.

Skin contact

Wash contact areas with soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing. Launder contaminated clothing before reuse. Get medical attention if irritation develops and persists.

Symptoms: Defatting of the skin.

Eye contact

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Get medical attention if irritation develops and persists.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth thoroughly. Do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs naturally, have victim lean forward to reduce risk of aspiration. Call a poison control centre immediately.

Symptoms: Droplets of the product aspirated into the lungs through ingestion or vomiting may cause a serious chemical pneumonia.

Immediate Medical Attention

Call a physician or poison control centre immediately.

Medical Treatment

Treat symptomatically.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Halon. Dry chemicals. Foam. Carbon dioxide (CO2). Water spray or fog.

Unsuitable media

Do not use a solid water stream as it may scatter and spread fire. Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.

Specific hazards

No unusual fire or explosion hazards noted.

Instructions

Cool containers exposed to flames with water until well after the fire is out.

Firefighter Protection

Firefighters must use standard protective equipment including flame retardant coat, helmet with face shield, gloves, rubber boots, and in enclosed spaces, SCBA. Use pressurised air mask if product is involved in a fire.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Keep unnecessary personnel away. Local authorities should be advised if significant spillages cannot be contained. Wear appropriate protective equipment and clothing during clean-up. Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Small spill

Wipe up with absorbent material (e.g. cloth, fleece). Clean surface thoroughly to remove residual contamination.

Large spill

ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). Stop the flow of material, if this is without risk. Dike the spilled material, where this is possible. Cover with plastic sheet to prevent spreading. Absorb in vermiculite, dry sand or earth and place into containers. Following product recovery, flush area with water.

Environmental

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Prevent entry into waterways, sewer, basements or confined areas. Avoid discharge to the aquatic environment.

Cleanup methods

Absorb in vermiculite, dry sand or earth and place into containers. Following product recovery, flush area with water. Wipe up with absorbent material (e.g. cloth, fleece). Clean surface thoroughly to remove residual contamination.

Materials: vermiculite, dry sand, earth, absorbent material (e.g. cloth, fleece)

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

All handling to take place in well-ventilated area. Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray. DO NOT handle, store or open near an open flame, sources of heat or sources of ignition. Protect material from direct sunlight. Do not get this material in contact with eyes. Avoid contact with skin. Do not get this material on clothing. Avoid prolonged exposure.

Storage

Store locked up. Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame. Store in a well-ventilated place.

Hygiene

Wash hands after handling and before eating. Remove and wash contaminated clothing promptly. Shower after work.

Fire prevention

DO NOT handle, store or open near an open flame, sources of heat or sources of ignition.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Provide adequate ventilation, including appropriate local extraction, to ensure that the defined occupational exposure limit is not exceeded.

Hands

Chemical resistant gloves are recommended. If contact with forearms is likely wear gauntlet style gloves. Wear suitable gloves tested to EN374. When prolonged or frequent repeated contact occurs, Nitrile gloves may be suitable. (Breakthrough time of > 240 minutes.) For incidental contact/splash protection Neoprene, PVC gloves may be suitable.

Eyes

Goggles/face shield are recommended.

Respiratory

When workers are facing concentrations above the exposure limit they must use appropriate certified respirators.

Skin/Body

Chemical/oil resistant clothing is recommended. Launder contaminated clothing before reuse.

Environmental

Emissions from ventilation or work process equipment should be checked to ensure they comply with the requirements of environmental protection legislation. Fume scrubbers, filters or engineering modifications to the process equipment may be necessary to reduce emissions to acceptable levels.
