First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

IF INHALED: Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor.

Skin contact

IF ON SKIN OR CLOTHING: Take off contaminated clothing. Rinse skin immediately with plenty of water for 15-20 minutes. Call a poison control centre or doctor for treatment advice.

Symptoms: May cause redness and pain. Burning pain and severe corrosive skin damage.

Eye contact

IF IN EYES: Hold eye open and rinse slowly and gently with water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses if present, after the first 5 minutes, then, continue rinsing eye. Call a poison control center or doctor for treatment advice.

Symptoms: Severe eye irritation. Symptoms may include stinging, tearing, redness, swelling, and blurred vision. Permanent eye damage including blindness could result.

Ingestion

IF SWALLOWED: Have person sip a glassful of water if able to swallow. Do not induce vomiting unless told to do so by a poison control center or doctor. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious person

Immediate Medical Attention

IN ALL CASES, CALL A DOCTOR OR POISON CONTROL CENTER IMMEDIATELY.

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Keep unnecessary personnel away. Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Wear appropriate protective equipment and clothing during clean-up. Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Ensure adequate ventilation.

Small spill

Wipe with absorbent material and discard. Clean surface thoroughly to remove residual contamination.

Large spill

Stop the flow of material, if this is without risk. Dike the spilled material, where this is possible. Absorb in vermiculite, dry sand or earth and place into containers. Following product recovery, flush area with water.

Environmental

Avoid release to the environment. Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Avoid discharge into drains, water courses or onto the ground. Do not discharge into lakes, streams, ponds or public waters.

Absorb in vermiculite, dry sand or earth and place into containers. Following product recovery, flush area with water. Wipe with absorbent material and discard. Clean surface thoroughly to remove residual contamination.

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Good general ventilation (typically 10 air changes per hour) should be used. Ventilation rates should be matched to conditions. If applicable, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to maintain airborne levels below recommended exposure limits. If exposure limits have not been established, maintain airborne levels to an acceptable level.
