Composition / Information on Ingredients
Chemical components, concentration ranges, and hazardous substance identification
A complex residuum from atmospheric distillation of crude oil. It consists of hydrocarbons having carbon numbers predominantly greater than C11 and boiling above approximately 200°C (392°F). This stream is likely to contain 5 wt.% or more of 4- to 6-membered condensed ring aromatic hydrocarbons.
| Chemical Name | CAS Number | Concentration | Hazardous |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residues (petroleum), atmospheric EC: 269-777-3 | 68333-22-2 | 100% | Yes |
Hydrogen sulphide can accumulate in the head space of storage tanks containing this product and can reach potentially hazardous concentrations
First Aid Measures
Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents
In case of exposure to intense concentrations of vapours, fumes or spray, transport the person away from the contaminated zone, keep warm and allow to rest. Immediately begin artificial respiration if breathing has ceased. Call a physician immediately. If there is any suspicion of inhalation of H2S (hydrogen sulphide), rescuers must wear breathing apparatus, belt and safety rope, and follow rescue procedures. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Provision of oxygen may help. Remove casualty to fresh air as quickly as possible.
Symptoms: Inhalation of vapours in high concentration may cause irritation of respiratory system. Causes headache, drowsiness or other effects to the central nervous system. Risk of hydrogen sulphide intoxication (H2S).
Immediately remove all stained or splashed clothing that is not adhering to the skin. Remove as much as possible by wiping. If necessary, use a fatty substance of animal or vegetable origin. Wash affected area with soap and water. Seek medical attention if skin irritation, swelling or redness develops and persists. When using high-pressure equipment, injection of product can occur. If high-pressure injuries occur, immediately seek professional medical attention. For minor thermal burns, cool the burn. Hold the burned area under cold running water for at least five minutes, or until the pain subsides. Do not puncture blisters. DO NOT attempt to remove portions of clothing glued to burnt skin but cut round them. Seek medical attention in all cases of serious burns. In this case, the casualty should be sent immediately to hospital.
Symptoms: Prolonged or repeated contact may dry skin and cause irritation. Risk of burns (if the product is hot). Skin irritation, swelling or redness may develop and persist.
IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. If irritation, blurred vision or swelling occurs and persists, obtain medical advice from a specialist. In case of eye contact with the hot product, COOL THE EYE IMMEDIATELY AND COPIOUSLY WITH COLD WATER for 10 minutes, keeping the eye open if possible. Take the person to a specialised medical centre.
Symptoms: Vapour may cause irritation. Risk of burns (if the product is hot). If irritation, blurred vision or swelling occurs and persists.
Do NOT induce vomiting. Give nothing to drink. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Consult a physician.
Symptoms: Few or no symptoms expected. If any, nausea and diarrhoea might occur.
Immediate Medical Attention
IN CASE OF SERIOUS OR PERSISTENT CONDITIONS, CALL A DOCTOR OR EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE. Obtain medical advice from a specialist if eye irritation, blurred vision or swelling occurs and persists. Take the person to a specialised medical centre in case of eye contact with the hot product. Seek medical attention if skin irritation, swelling or redness develops and persists. If high-pressure injuries occur, immediately seek professional medical attention. Seek medical attention in all cases of serious burns; the casualty should be sent immediately to hospital. Call a physician immediately if breathing has ceased after inhalation. Consult a physician after ingestion.
Medical Treatment
In the case of thermal burns: DO NOT attempt to remove portions of clothing glued to burnt skin but cut round them. Treat symptomatically.

Exposure Controls / PPE
Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment
Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not enter empty storage tanks until measurements of available oxygen have been carried out. When working in confined spaces (tanks, containers, etc.), ensure that there is a supply of air suitable for breathing and wear the recommended equipment.
Hydrocarbon-proof gloves. Nitrile rubber. Neoprene gloves. Wear suitable gloves tested to EN374.
Work helmet with neck cloth. Tightly fitting safety goggles. or. Face-shield.
For rescue and maintenance work in storage tanks use self-contained breathing apparatus. The use of breathing apparatus must comply strictly with the manufacturer's instructions and the regulations governing their choices and uses. Maintain adequate ventilation. Do not breathe vapours, mist or gas. In an emergency or for exceptional short-lasting jobs in an atmosphere polluted by the product, it is necessary to wear a protective respiratory equipment. Approved respiratory protection equipment shall be used in spaces where hydrogen sulphidemayaccumulate:full facemask with cartridge/filter type B (grey for inorganic vapours including H2S) or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Wear single use hydrocarbon impermeable overalls. Protective shoes or boots. Rubber or plastic boots. Coverall (with trousers legs over boots).
The product should not be allowed to enter drains, water courses or the soil.
