First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, oxygen should be administered by qualified personnel. Move to fresh air.

Symptoms: Asthmatic-type symptoms may develop and may be immediate or delayed up to several hours. Extreme asthmatic reactions can be life threatening.

Skin contact

Wipe off paste with paper towel or cloth. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water (using soap, if available). Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. For severe exposures, get under safety shower after removing clothing. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.

Symptoms: This compound is a known skin sensitizer.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes.

Symptoms: Workplace vapors have produced reversible corneal epithelial edema impairing vision.

Ingestion

DO NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Medical Treatment

Eyes: Stain for evidence of corneal injury. If cornea is burned, instill antibiotic steroid preparation frequently. Skin: Treat symptomatically as for contact dermatitis or thermal burns. Respiratory: Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Specific hazards

Sealed containers at elevated temperatures or contaminated with water may rupture explosively. During a fire, MDI vapors and other irritating, highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. At temperatures above 204.4°C (400°F), polymeric MDI can polymerize and decompose which can cause pressure build-up in closed containers. Explosive rupture is possible.
