First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

In case of irritation of respiratory system with lithium combustion aerosols move to fresh air, loose tight clothing to relieve breathing, if no circulation, begin chest compressions. Call for a doctor. In case of unconsciousness place patient stably in lateral position for transportation

Symptoms: irritates respiratory organs

Skin contact

Flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes and seek for medical assistance

Symptoms: irritates skin

Eye contact

Immediately remove the substance with a cotton ball or cotton cloth, then flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes. Run the water jet from the outer eye corner (temple) towards the inner (towards the nose). Do not rub eyes. Seek for medical assistance

Symptoms: irritates eyes

Ingestion

Remove substance from mouth, rinse mouth with plenty of water. Do not induce vomiting! Immediately call a doctor

Symptoms: Ingestion causes severe problems as vomiting may damage digestive canal and/or respiratory passages.

Flammable solid matter. Reacts violently with water. Heated substance explosively reacts with water. Burns in carbon dioxide

Instructions

Never leave extinguished fire unattended. After all material has apparently burned and cooled, carefully turn over remaining residue and be prepared to reextinguish should reaction occur. Carefully place the residue in steel drum using a long-handled shovel and cover with extinguishing media

Firefighter Protection

Wear NIOSH approved full protective gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). It is required to protect against heating, combustion products, and lack of oxygen. To inhale fire smoke, gas, or fumes is strictly forbidden.

Block-off the dangerous area within the radius of at least 200 m. Remove unauthorized persons. Provide first aid to injured.

Wear safety glasses or goggles and dry rubber gloves. In facilities with relative humidity below 50%, or if lithium surface is coated with mineral oil, lithium pieces can be handled in open atmosphere at room temperature.

To maintain best quality, humidity levels of less than 2% are recommended

When working with melted lithium additionally use wool fabric hat with face shield, wool fabric trousers and a jacket, and fire-retardant apron, or male clothing set KC099M

Reactivity

When reacting with air burns with blue flame and generates lithium oxide. When reacting with water generates lithium hydroxide with hydrogen evolution. Violently reacts with mineral acids producing respective salts. Reacts directly with halogens producing halogenid. When heating with hydrogen produces hydride, with sulphur – sulphide, with nitrogen – nitride, with carbon – carbide, and with silicon – silicide, accordingly. When dissolved in liquid ammonia produces amide. Produces alloys with many metals by rendering viscosity or hardness. Forms intermetallic compounds when reacting with aluminum, zinc, magnesium, cadmium, mercury, thallium, lead, bismuth, and tin

Hazardous reactions

Lithium reacts violently with water. Interreacts with nitrogen at ambient temperature, and in humid air conditions. Ignites in chlorine, or bromine or iodine vapors. Burns in carbon dioxide. Melts and ignites in concentrated nitric acid
