First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, oxygen should be administered by qualified personnel. Move to fresh air. If symptoms persist, seek medical advice.

Symptoms: Asthmatic-type symptoms may develop and may be immediate or delayed up to several hours. Extreme asthmatic reactions can be life threatening.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Wipe off paste with paper towel or cloth. Rinse with running water and soap. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse. Discard any shoes or clothing items that cannot be decontaminated. If symptoms develop and persist, get medical attention.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

Ingestion

DO NOT induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek medical attention immediately.

Immediate Medical Attention

Seek medical attention immediately.

Medical Treatment

Persons with asthmatic-type conditions, chronic bronchitis, other chronic respiratory diseases or recurrent skin eczema or sensitization should be excluded from working with isocyanates.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Use extinguishing measures appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment.

Unsuitable media

Water may be an ineffective extinguishing medium. Do not use high volume water jet.

Specific hazards

At higher temperatures isocyanate may be released. Sealed containers at elevated temperatures or contaminated with water may rupture explosively.

Instructions

In case of fire, keep containers cool with water spray. Keep unnecessary personnel away.

Firefighter Protection

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing, such as turn-out gear.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

isolate the hazard area and deny entry to unnecessary and unprotected personnel.

Small spill

Cover spill area with suitable absorbent material. Saturate absorbent material with neutralization solution and mix. Wait 15 minutes. Collect material in open-head metal containers. Repeat applications of decontamination solution with scrubbing, followed by absorbent until surface is decontaminated.

Large spill

Large quantities may be pumped into closed, but not sealed containers for disposal.

Environmental

Do not empty into drains / surface water / ground water.

Cleanup methods

Cover spill area with suitable absorbent material. Saturate absorbent material with neutralization solution and mix. Wait 15 minutes. Collect material in open-head metal containers. Repeat applications of decontamination solution with scrubbing, followed by absorbent until surface is decontaminated.

Materials: suitable absorbent material, neutralization solution, decontamination solution
