Identified Uses

Sulfur dichloride is used in organic synthesis and also as a precursor to several inorganic sulfur compounds. It is used in the preparation of additives for extreme pressure lubricants from phenols and in vulcanizing agents for natural and synthetic rubbers. They also play a role in the synthesis of insecticides, pharmaceuticals, and dyes. Synthesis of the chlorides is by the controlled reaction of chlorine gas with elemental sulfur.

First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Move exposed person to fresh air. Lay patient down. Keep warm & at rest.

Symptoms: Cough, difficulty breathing, bronchospasm, pulmonary edema.

Skin contact

Get under emergency shower immediately. Remove all contaminated clothing as rapidly as possible while under the shower. If no safety shower is available flush the affected area with large amount of running water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Dust the affected area with powdered sodium bi carbonate. In case of burns apply a dry sterile dressing.

Symptoms: Burns, dermal hypersensitivity reactions.

Eye contact

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses if easily possible. The eyelids should be held open and away from the eyeball to ensure that all surface are flushed thoroughly.

Symptoms: Causes severe irritation to eyes, pain and eye burns. May cause chemical conjunctivitis and corneal damage.

Ingestion

If affected person is conscious, immediately give several glasses of water or lime water or milk of magnesia or plain milk. No attempt should be made to induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Symptoms: May cause severe and permanent damage to the digestive tract. May lose consciousness; also there might be acid burns due to hydrolysis. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns and gastric hemorrhage, dilation, edema, necrosis, and strictures may occur.

Immediate Medical Attention

Seek medical attention immediately.

Medical Treatment

If cough or difficulty breathing develops, evaluate for respiratory tract irritation, bronchitis, or pneumonitis. Administer 60 to 100% oxygen at 6 lit/min. In case of broncophasm, bronchodilators are to be administered intravenously or by nebulaiser. In case of pulmonary edema steroid therapy is to be given. Treat bronchospasm with beta2 agonist and corticosteroid aerosols. If patients develop dermal hypersensitivity reactions it may require treatment with corticosteroids or antihistamines.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Use dry Chemicals, dry sand, or carbon dioxide. If large quantities of combustibles are involved, use water in flooding quantities as spray and fog. Use water spray to knock-down vapors. Cool all affected containers with flooding quantities of water.

Unsuitable media

Do not use water on material itself.

Specific hazards

Reaction with water may generate much heat which will increase the concentration of fumes in the air.

Instructions

Use non-sparking tools and equipment. Do not get water inside container. Move container from fire area if it can be done without risk. Stay away from the ends of tanks.

Firefighter Protection

Do not enter the area without proper protection. Do not breathe fumes. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing. Cool containers with water spray until well after the fire is out.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to water ways. Isolate area. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering the contaminated area. If a leak or spill has not ignited, use water spray to disperse the vapors, to protect personnel attempting to stop leak, and to flush spills away from exposures Water spray may be used to cool containers and adjacent surfaces.

Environmental

Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to water ways.

Cleanup methods

Use clean non-sparking tools to collect material and place it into loosely covered plastic containers for later disposal. Carefully collect material in containers for disposal.

Materials: clean non-sparking tools, loosely covered plastic containers

Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood. Do not breathe vapor, mist, or gas. Avoid prolonged or repeated exposure. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame. Isolate from incompatible material & conditions. Do not pressurize, cut, weld braze, solder, drill, grid, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open flames. Protect against physical damage. Check regularly for spills/leaks.

Storage

Store away from incompatible materials and foodstuff. Keep away from heat, sparks, flame and sources of ignition.

Hygiene

Do not eat, drink and smoke in work areas. Wash hands with water & soap after handling the substance; before breaks and after work. Take bath after work. Contaminated clothing and protective equipment should be cleaned before reuse. Good industrial practice in housekeeping and personal hygiene should be followed.

Fire prevention

Keep away from heat, sparks, flame and sources of ignition.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Use adequate general or local explosion proof ventilation to keep airborne levels to acceptable levels & other engineering controls to keep employee exposure low.

Hands

Wear chemical resistant protective gloves. E.g. Gauntlet type gloves of nitrile rubber or butyl rubber or PVC gloves.

Eyes

Use safety goggles with side shields and/or a full face shield while handling the material or where splashing is possible. Do not wear contact lenses.

Respiratory

Use self contained, positive pressure breathing apparatus. NIOSH/MSHA approved full face organic respiratory protection is required in the absence of proper environmental control.

Skin/Body

Wear chemical resistant apron. Use flame retardant antistatic protective clothing Wear safety shoes for foot protection
