First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration. Get medical attention immediately. Delayed pulmonary edema may occur. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Inhalation of corrosive fumes/gases may cause coughing, choking, headache, dizziness, and weakness for several hours. Pulmonary edema may occur with tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, bluish skin, decreased blood pressure, and increased heart rate.

Skin contact

Wash off immediately with soap and plenty of water while removing all contaminated clothes and shoes. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Corrosive.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Keep eye wide open while rinsing. Do not rub affected area. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Burning sensation. May cause blindness.

Ingestion

Immediate medical attention is required. Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Ingestion causes severe swelling, severe damage to the delicate tissue and danger of perforation.

Immediate Medical Attention

Immediate medical attention is required.

Medical Treatment

Product is a corrosive material. Possible perforation of stomach or esophagus should be investigated. Asphyxia from glottal edema may occur. Marked decrease in blood pressure may occur with moist rales, frothy sputum, and high pulse pressure.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Use extinguishing measures that are appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment.

Specific hazards

The product causes burns of eyes, skin and mucous membranes. Thermal decomposition can lead to release of irritating gases and vapors. Contact with metals may evolve flammable hydrogen gas.

Instructions

Cool containers with water spray.

Firefighter Protection

Firefighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full firefighting turnout gear.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Evacuate personnel to safe areas. Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Do not use steel or aluminum tools or equipment.

Large spill

Dike to collect large liquid spills.

Environmental

Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not allow to enter into soil/subsoil. Prevent product from entering drains. Keep out of waterways.

Cleanup methods

Take up with sand or other noncombustible absorbent material and place into containers for later disposal. Wash spill site with water after material pickup is complete. Following product recovery, flush area with water.

Materials: sand or other noncombustible absorbent material

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Handle product only in closed system or provide appropriate exhaust ventilation. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Reacts with aluminum and its alloys. When diluting, always add the product to water. Never add water to the product. Keep containers tightly closed.

Storage

Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Protect from moisture. Store locked up. Keep out of the reach of children. Store away from other materials. Recommended storage temperature between 15-30°C. Protect from frost.

Hygiene

Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not breathe vapor or mist. Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection. Wash hands and face before breaks and immediately after handling the product. Remove and wash contaminated clothing and gloves, including the inside, before re-use. Regular cleaning of equipment, work area and clothing is recommended. Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. Safety shower and eye bath should be provided.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Eyewash stations, Showers, Ventilation systems

Hands

Wear suitable gloves, Impervious gloves, Neoprene gloves, Chloroprene gloves, Fluorocarbon rubber (Viton). The exact break through time has to be found out by the manufacturer of the protective gloves and has to be observed.

Eyes

Tight sealing safety goggles. Face protection shield.

Respiratory

Wear an approved respirator in the absence of adequate ventilation. In the event mists or aerosols are generated, use a respirator equipped with an appropriate filter.
