First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

If fumes or combustion products are inhaled remove from contaminated area. Lay patient down. Keep warm and rested. Prostheses such as false teeth, which may block airway, should be removed, where possible, prior to initiating first aid procedures. Apply artificial respiration if not breathing, preferably with a demand valve resuscitator, bag-valve mask device, or pocket mask as trained. Perform CPR if necessary. Transport to hospital, or doctor.

Skin contact

Immediately remove all contaminated clothing, including footwear. Flush skin and hair with running water (and soap if available). Seek medical attention in event of irritation.

Eye contact

Wash out immediately with fresh running water. Ensure complete irrigation of the eye by keeping eyelids apart and away from eye and moving the eyelids by occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention without delay; if pain persists or recurs seek medical attention. Removal of contact lenses after an eye injury should only be undertaken by skilled personnel.

Ingestion

Immediately give a glass of water. First aid is not generally required. If in doubt, contact a Poisons Information Centre or a doctor.

Immediate Medical Attention

Seek medical attention without delay; if pain persists or recurs seek medical attention. Seek medical attention in event of irritation. Transport to hospital, or doctor.

Medical Treatment

Absorption of zinc compounds occurs in the small intestine. The metal is heavily protein bound. Elimination results primarily from faecal excretion. The usual measures for decontamination (Ipecac Syrup, lavage, charcoal or cathartics) may be administered, although patients usually have sufficient vomiting not to require them. CaNa2EDTA has been used successfully to normalise zinc levels and is the agent of choice.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Water spray or fog. Foam. Dry chemical powder. BCF (where regulations permit).

Specific hazards

Non combustible. Not considered a significant fire risk, however containers may burn.

Instructions

Alert Fire Brigade and tell them location and nature of hazard. Prevent, by any means available, spillage from entering drains or water courses. Use fire fighting procedures suitable for surrounding area.

Firefighter Protection

Wear breathing apparatus plus protective gloves in the event of a fire.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Small spill

Remove all ignition sources. Clean up all spills immediately. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Control personal contact with the substance, by using protective equipment. Environmental hazard - contain spillage.

Large spill

Environmental hazard - contain spillage. Moderate hazard. CAUTION: Advise personnel in area. Alert Emergency Services and tell them location and nature of hazard. Control personal contact by wearing protective clothing.

Environmental

Environmental hazard - contain spillage.

Cleanup methods

Clean up all spills immediately.
