First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. If respiratory symptoms persist, get medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Respiratory symptoms

Skin contact

Wash with plenty of soap and water. Take off contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse. If skin irritation occurs, get medical advice/attention. Wash contaminated clothing and shoes before reuse.

Symptoms: Skin irritation

Eye contact

Immediately flush eyes with running water for several minutes, holding eyelids open and occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing for at least 15 minutes. If eye irritation persists, get medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Eye irritation

Ingestion

Rinse mouth, then drink plenty of water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Call a Poison Centre or doctor/physician for advice. If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.

Immediate Medical Attention

If eye irritation persists, get medical advice/attention. If skin irritation occurs, get medical advice/attention. If respiratory symptoms persist, get medical advice/attention.

Medical Treatment

Treat symptomatically.

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

If material is involved in a fire, use extinguishing media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. Suppress (knock down) gases/vapours/mists with a water spray jet.

Specific hazards

Containers may explode when heated.

Instructions

If safe to do so, move undamaged containers from fire area. Cool containers with water spray until well after fire is out.

Firefighter Protection

Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Structural firefighters' protective clothing will only provide limited protection.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not touch or walk through spilled material - Slippery when spilt! Avoid breathing vapours and contact with eyes, skin and clothing.

Small spill

For minor spills, contain and absorb with inert materials (sand, earth), sweep up, place contaminated material in a sealed container and place in garbage.

Large spill

For large quantities dispose of at an approved waste management site.

Environmental

Prevent entry into drains and waterways.

Cleanup methods

Wash area down with excess water.

Materials: sand, earth
