First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove casualty from exposure ensuring one's own safety whilst doing so. If unconscious, check for breathing and apply artificial respiration if necessary. If unconscious and breathing is OK, place in the recovery position. If breathing becomes bubbly, have the casualty sit and provide oxygen if available. Transfer to hospital as soon as possible.

Symptoms: Exposure may cause coughing or wheezing. There may be congestion of the lungs causing severe shortness of breath. There may be loss of consciousness. Convulsions may occur.

Skin contact

Instantly wash with plenty of water and rinse thoroughly. If skin irritation continues, consult a doctor.

Symptoms: May cause mild irritation and redness at the site of contact.

Eye contact

Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water. Use eye protection. Call a doctor immediately.

Symptoms: May cause irritation and redness.

Ingestion

Do not induce vomiting! Rinse out mouth and then drink plenty of water. In case of persistent symptoms consult doctor.

Symptoms: Nausea and stomach pain may occur. There may be vomiting and diarrhoea. Convulsions may occur. There may be loss of consciousness.

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Alcohol resistant foam. Carbon dioxide.

Unsuitable media

None known

Specific hazards

Highly flammable. Forms explosive air-vapour mixture. Vapour may travel considerable distance to source of ignition and flash back.

Firefighter Protection

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing along with protective equipment.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Eliminate all sources of ignition. Wear protective clothing and keep away unprotected persons. Ensure adequate ventilation. Avoid skin and eye contact. Do not breathe vapours.

Environmental

Do not allow to enter drainage system, surface or ground water.

Cleanup methods

Absorb with liquid-binding material

Materials: sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace. Ensure good interior ventilation, especially at floor level. (Fumes are heavier than air). Open and handle container with care. Avoid skin and eye contact. Do not inhale vapours/aerosols. Make sure that all applicable workplace limits are observed.

Storage

Store in cool location. Store in cool, dry conditions in well sealed containers. Protect from heat and direct sunlight. Store container in a well ventilated position. Do not seal container gastight.

Fire prevention

Keep ignition sources away - Do not smoke.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

A system of local and/or general exhaust is recommended to keep employee exposures as low as possible. Local exhaust ventilation is generally preferred because it can control the emissions of the contaminant at its source, preventing dispersion of it into the general work area.

Hands

Wear PVC gloves (AS2161).

Eyes

Chemical safety goggles (AS1336/1337).

Respiratory

Wear an approved P1 respirator where dusts/vapours are formed (AS/NZS1715/1716).

Skin/Body

Impervious coveralls and safety footwear (AS3765/2210).
