First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove person from dust exposed area and give fresh air.

Symptoms: Mechanical irritation caused by dust in the airways.

Skin contact

Wash with water and soap. In case of burns due to liquid metal, rinse well with water.

Symptoms: Generally, the product does not irritate the skin.

Eye contact

Rinse cautiously with water or an ocular solution.

Symptoms: reddening and heavy watering of the eyes

Ingestion

Remove source of further ingestion.

Immediate Medical Attention

Consult a physician / a hospital. See a doctor upon persistent discomfort. If troubles appear, consult a physician.

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Dry sand, dry inert powder, CO2.

Unsuitable media

Water, fire extinguishing media with high pressure jet.

Specific hazards

Particles suspended in air may under certain conditions cause dust explosions. Although flammability test under REACH (EC guideline) shows silicon to be non-flammable, small silicon particles (< 40 micrometers) could be ignited by an ignition source and propagate flame that extinguish quickly. The flammability and intensity of the blast increases gradually as particle size decreases. Contact between water and molten metal (by accidental spill, addition of wet materials, use of wet tools, ...) can cause an explosion: physical phenomenon of steam explosion and chemical phenomenon of flammable hydrogen gas formation.

Emergency procedures

Avoid dust build-up or handling that generates particles suspended in air (risk of dust explosion). Ensure adequate ventilation. Do not smoke. Avoid skin and eye contact. Avoid dust inhalation.

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Wear appropriate work clothes, gloves and eye protection (and a respiratory protection in case of particles dispersion in the air). Never add wet material to molten materials (especially the addition of wet material in a melting furnace) : risk of explosion, see section 10.

Storage

Store in a dry well-ventilated area. Protect against air humidity. Store far from water and dampness (avoid places easily flooded, close to water or steam pipe work). Store far from acid or basic solutions. Store in original packaging or in areas designated for this purpose in the case of bulk material. Check for damaged packaging prior to storage.

Fire prevention

Avoid flames, sparks or other ignition source (welding, oxycutting...) in dusty areas.

Stability and Reactivity

Stability

Under normal conditions, the product is stable.

Reactivity

The product may react with water, dampness, acids or bases.

Hazardous reactions

No dangerous reactions when handling and storage in accordance with the provisions.

Avoid

Dust may cause a risk of explosive atmosphere (over 60 g/m3 in air for dust composed of 50% or more of particles < 45 μm). The presence of ignition sources in areas with a high concentration of dust creates a risk of dust explosion.

Incompatible

Avoid non-mastered contact with water, dampness, acids or bases.

Decomposition

In contact with bases, may release hydrogen H2 (flammable gas). In contact with acids, water or dampness, may release very small quantities of hydrogen H2 (flammable gas). The reaction with hydrofluoric acid (HF) and nitric acid (HNO3) leads to the formation of toxic gases such as silicon tetrafluoride (SiF4) or nitrogen oxides (NOx).
