First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove casualty to fresh air and keep warm and at rest. If unconscious but breathing normally, place in recovery position and seek medical advice.

Symptoms: May cause respiratory irritation. Cough.

Skin contact

Wash off any skin contamination immediately. When in doubt or if symptoms are observed, get medical advice.

Symptoms: Erythema (Redness). Occurrence of severe chemical burns resembling a burn.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately carefully and thoroughly with eye-bath or water. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Transport to the ophthalmologist or eye clinic as soon as possible. Continue rinsing with isotonic saline solution during transport, alternatively with water.

Symptoms: Conjunctival oedema (chemosis). Corneal opacity. May cause severe damage with formation of corneal ulcers.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Call a POISON CENTER. Let 1 glass of water be drunken in little sips (dilution effect).

Symptoms: Burning/pain and tumescence in the mouth/throat/oesophagus/stomach. Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Aspiration hazard.

Medical Treatment

After massive inhalation administration of glucocorticoids (inhalative). If necessary, all further measures for pulmonary edema prophylaxis. Supplemental oxygen supply. Monitoring of respiratory function. Treat skin irritations with a dermatocorticoid foam. Severe skin damage is treated in the same way as burns. Treat symptomatically. Stabilisation.

Emergency procedures

For non-emergency personnel: Wear personal protection equipment (refer to section 8). Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not breathe gas/fumes/vapour/spray. Remove victim out of the danger area. Provide adequate ventilation. For emergency responders: Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing. Substance is non-flammable. Adapt fire and explosion protection measures to the combustible substances in the area. In case of major fire and large quantities: Fight fire remotely due to the risk of explosion.

Small spill

Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomaceous earth, acid- or universal binding agents). Rinse affected areas with water. Ventilate affected area. Dispose according to local legislation.

Large spill

In case of major fire and large quantities: Fight fire remotely due to the risk of explosion.

Environmental

Do not allow to enter into surface water or drains. The product is an acid. Before discharge into sewage plants the product normally needs to be neutralised.

Cleanup methods

Take up mechanically, placing in appropriate containers for disposal. Absorb spillage. Rinse affected areas with water.

Engineering

Technical measures and the application of suitable work processes have priority over personal protection equipment. If handled uncovered, arrangements with local exhaust ventilation have to be used.

When handling with chemical substances, protective gloves must be worn with the CE-label including the four control digits. Recommended glove articles DIN-/EN-Norms EN ISO 374 in the case of wanting to use the gloves again, clean them before taking off and air them well. Eye glasses with side protection DIN-/EN-Norms EN 166. Recommendation: VWR 111-0432

Respiratory

Usually no personal respirative protection necessary. Required when dusts are generated. Generation/formation of dust. Suitable respiratory protection apparatus: Filtering Half-face mask (EN 149). Recommendation: VWR 111-0451. Suitable material: P3. Recommendation: VWR 111-0244
