First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove casualty to fresh air and keep warm and at rest. If unconscious but breathing normally, place in recovery position and seek medical advice.

Symptoms: Respiratory irritation. Cough.

Skin contact

Wash off any skin contamination immediately. When in doubt or if symptoms are observed, get medical advice.

Symptoms: Erythema (Redness). Occurrence of severe chemical burns resembling a burn.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately carefully and thoroughly with eye-bath or water. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Transport to the ophthalmologist or eye clinic as soon as possible. Continue rinsing with isotonic saline solution during transport, alternatively with water.

Symptoms: Conjunctival oedema (chemosis). Corneal opacity. May cause severe damage with formation of corneal ulcers.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Call a POISON CENTER. Let 1 glass of water be drunken in little sips (dilution effect).

Symptoms: Burning/pain and tumescence in the mouth/throat/oesophagus/stomach. Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Aspiration hazard.

Medical Treatment

After massive inhalation administration of glucocorticoids (inhalative). If necessary, all further measures for pulmonary edema prophylaxis. If necessary, treat skin irritations with a dermatocorticoid foam. Severe skin damage is treated in the same way as burns. Treat symptomatically. Aspiration of the fluid from the stomach via a nasogastric tube, avoiding intubation, if this is possible within 60 minutes. Stabilisation.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

ABC-powder, Carbon dioxide (CO2), Dry sand, Nitrogen

Unsuitable media

Water spray, Full water jet

Specific hazards

Non-combustible corrosive substances (liquid). Serious eye damage/eye irritation. Substance is non-flammable. Adapt fire and explosion protection measures to the combustible substances in the area. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.

Instructions

Co-ordinate fire-fighting measures to the fire surroundings.

Firefighter Protection

Wear a self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Remove victim out of the danger area. Provide adequate ventilation.

Small spill

Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomaceous earth, acid- or universal binding agents). Rinse affected areas with water. Ventilate affected area.

Large spill

Dike or dam to contain for later disposal. Stop leak if safe to do so. Take up mechanically, placing in appropriate containers for disposal. Absorb spillage to prevent material damage.

Environmental

Do not allow to enter into surface water or drains. The product is an acid. Before discharge into sewage plants the product normally needs to be neutralised.

Cleanup methods

Take up mechanically, placing in appropriate containers for disposal. Absorb spillage to prevent material damage. Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomaceous earth, acid- or universal binding agents). Rinse affected areas with water.

Materials: sand, diatomaceous earth, acid- or universal binding agents

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Wear personal protection equipment (refer to section 8). Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Avoid inhalation of the product.

Storage

Store in a dry place. Store in a closed container. Keep the packing dry and well sealed to prevent contamination and absorption of humidity.

Hygiene

Wash hands before breaks and after work. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. When using do not eat, drink or smoke. Provide eye shower and label its location conspicuously.

Fire prevention

Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other ignition sources. No smoking. Take precautionary measures against static discharges.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Technical measures and the application of suitable work processes have priority over personal protection equipment. If handled uncovered, arrangements with local exhaust ventilation have to be used.

Hands

When handling with chemical substances, protective gloves must be worn with the CE-label including the four control digits. Recommended glove articles DIN-/EN-Norms EN ISO 374 in the case of wanting to use the gloves again, clean them before taking off and air them well. By short-term hand contact: Suitable material: NBR (Nitrile rubber), Thickness of the glove material: 0,12 mm, Breakthrough time: < 480 min, Recommended glove articles: VWR 112-0998. By long-term hand contact: Suitable material: Butyl caoutchouc (butyl rubber), Thickness of the glove material: 0,30 mm, Breakthrough time: > 480 min, Recommended glove articles: VWR 112-3779.

Eyes

Eye glasses with side protection DIN-/EN-Norms EN 166. Recommendation: VWR 111-0432

Respiratory

Usually no personal respirative protection necessary. Required when dusts are generated. Generation/formation of dust. Suitable respiratory protection apparatus: Filtering Half-face mask (EN 149). Recommendation: VWR 111-0451. Suitable material: P3. Recommendation: VWR 111-0244.

Skin/Body

When handling with chemical substances, protective clothing with CE-labels including the four control digits must be worn.
