First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

remove the victim from the contaminated area and keep it in a well-ventilated area. In case of shortness of breath (dyspnoea) or respiratory arrest, provide artificial respiration or oxygen by trained personnel. If the person is unconscious, place in recovery position and get medical attention immediately. Contact a Poison Centre.

Symptoms: inhalation of formaldehyde can lead to irritation of the mucous membranes and respiratory tract. In severe cases laryngeal and pulmonary oedema, pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome may occur.

Skin contact

remove immediately the contaminated clothing. Wash for a long time the contaminated parts with running water, then with a 2% AMMONIUM HYDRATE solution. Apply sterilized pads on the injured skin and require a dermatological advice.

Symptoms: irritant, redness of the skin. Toxic in contact with skin with possible corrosive effects.

Eye contact

remove any contact lenses. Rinse immediately for at least 15 minutes with running water affected eyes holding the eyelids open; if necessary, require ophthalmologist assistance.

Symptoms: irritant, reddening of the conjunctiva with possible corrosive effects.

Ingestion

rinse immediately and many times the mouth with water; remove dentures if any. Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. If ingestion has occurred and if the exposed person is conscious, drink plenty of water or milk and induce vomiting keeping his head low so that vomit does not enter the lungs. If unconscious, place in recovery position and get medical attention immediately. Contact a Poison Centre.

Symptoms: ingestion of concentrated formaldehyde solutions can cause burns and ulceration to the gastrointestinal tract. Common features are a burning sensation in the mouth and throat, chest or abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and gastrointestinal haemorrhage.

Immediate Medical Attention

If victim ingested or inhaled large amounts of product, immediately contact a Poison Control Centre.

Medical Treatment

treat symptomatically. Gastric lavage: administer 100 ml of solution containing 2% of ammonium carbonate and 20% of urea. The gastric lavage gives positive results only if carried out within the first 15 minutes following the ingestion. Carry out a prophylaxis against pulmonary oedema.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

fires involving the product can be extinguished using vaporized water, alcohol resistant foam, carbon dioxide or dry extinguishing media.

Unsuitable media

the direct application of a water jet onto a fire. Water is not effective for putting out fires but can be used to cool containers exposed to flames to prevent explosions.

Specific hazards

In case of fire or overheating, it will occur a pressure increase with a possibility of breakage of the containers and the risk of a subsequent explosion. The vapour / gas is heavier than air and may spread on the floor. Vapours may accumulate in low or confined areas or travel a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back. Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion.

Instructions

Move containers next to the fire; if this is not possible, keep containers cool by spraying with water.

Firefighter Protection

The personnel involved must use full face masks or self-contained breathing apparatus and wear appropriate clothing.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

In case of leakage the people not involved in the emergency operations must be moved away from the interested area staying upwind. Alerting emergency workers and, if the case, the firefighters.

Environmental

Prevent the liquid from entering drains and surface waters.

Cleanup methods

Suck and collect spillage, clean thoroughly with sand or other non-combustible absorbent material.

Materials: sand or other non-combustible absorbent material

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Ensure good ventilation of the areas of storage and handling. Loading, unloading and handling operations must be done by skilled personnel: a closed-loop system must be adopted. To minimize occupational exposure may be helpful the use of respiratory protective equipment, clothes, glasses, rubber gloves or barrier cream (see Section 8.2.2). Do not enter storage areas and confined spaces unless adequately ventilated. Avoid accumulation of electrostatic charges. The empty containers retain product residue and can be dangerous. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.

Storage

Do not enter storage areas and confined spaces unless adequately ventilated.

Hygiene

Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.

Fire prevention

Avoid accumulation of electrostatic charges.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

SADEFORM UF80 contain Formaldehyde; it must therefore be handled with care and in closed loops. The vapours which are released during handling must be channelled into suitable collection and abatement systems. The places of storage and handling should be well ventilated; provide adequate local exhaust ventilation.

Hands

Where the use of gloves is advised, the following chemically resistant glove materials (tested to EN 374) also with prolonged, direct contact (Recommended: Protective index 6, corresponding > 480 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374) should be used: Material - butyl rubber (butyl) – 0.7 mm coating thickness Material - nitrile rubber (NBR) – 0.4 mm coating thickness. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer of gloves regarding the time of use. Provide training and an intense supervision and control activity.

Eyes

Where eye protection is advised tightly fitting safety goggles (splash goggles (e.g. EN 166) should be used. A chemical-protective face shield (e.g. EN 166) should be used where suitable face shields are advised. Avoid contact lenses.

Respiratory

The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for respiratory protection is required if the technical measures implemented are not sufficient to limit worker exposure to threshold values considered. The protection provided by masks is in any case limited. If the Formaldehyde concentration in the working places reach or overcome the TLV, use adequate masks with filters for inorganic vapours (type B - GREY) according to the standard EN 14387. If there are gases or vapours of a different nature and / or gases or vapours with particles (aerosols, fumes, mists, etc.), should be provided for combined filters. It should be noted that filter masks may be of limited use in cases of high or unknown exposure; If the concentration of Formaldehyde in the airborne exceeds that allowed by the filters or the oxygen concentration is below 17%, use self-contained breathing apparatus in compliance with standards EN 137 or EN 138. For the correct choice of respiratory protection device, refer to the standard EN 529.

Skin/Body

A chemical-protection suit (e.g. according to EN 14605) should be used where suitable coveralls are advised.

Environmental

SADEFORM UF80 (Formaldehyde) is classified non-Environmentally Hazardous. However, it must provide that manipulation occurs in confined areas protected by containment against spills and local exhaust ventilation conveyed to suitable abatement systems.

Ecological Information

Environmental toxicity, biodegradation, and bioaccumulation data

12.1 Toxicity

12.2 Persistence and degradability

Formaldehyde, under aerobic conditions, is easily biodegradable; practical experiences have shown that an aqueous solution containing till 500 mg/L of Formaldehyde can be treated in a normal activated sludge wastewater treatment plant without leaving by-products.

12.1 Toxicity

Acute fish toxicity The acute data on formaldehyde toxicity to fish are similar and do not vary to a great extent. The most sensitive species is the striped bass (Morone saxatilis) for witch a LC₅₀ (96 h) = 6.18 mg/L is reported (Reardon, 1990). LC₅₀ (6 d) embryos of Danio rerio 6.9 mg/L (Meinelt et al., 2005) NOEC (28 d) Oryzias latipes ≥ 48 mg/L (Johnsson et al., 1993) Aquatic invertebrates toxicity: EC₅₀ (48 h) = 5.8 mg/L Daphnia pulex (Tisler & Zagorc-Koncan, 1997) NOEC (21 d) Daphnia magna > 6.4 mg/L (SGS, 2008) Algae and aquatic plants toxicity: EC₅₀ (72h) Desmodesmus subspicatus 4.89 mg/L (Eisentraeger et al., 2003); no NOEC given in study

12.2 Persistence and degradability

Formaldehyde is easily biodegradable by some bacteria in the ground (according OECD criteria): BOD/ThO = 91% (14d); TOC = 97% MITI-I-Test (OECD 301 C) ThOD = 90% (28d) Closed-Bottle-Test (OECD 301 D) (Gerike P, Gode P 1990). Formaldehyde exhibits no potential for hydrolysis, due to the absence of hydrolyzable groups. Phototransformation in air: Half-life (DT50): 1.7 d (direct photolysis). In the atmosphere, formaldehyde is expected to be indirectly photodegraded by reaction with OH-radicals, with a half-life of 1.71 d (Atkinson 1992). Direct photolysis is also a relevant removal process for formaldehyde in air. A half-life of 4.1 hours was measured (Gardner et al. 1984).

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential

12.3 Bioaccumulative potential

The low value of log Pow measured (0.35 at 20 °C) indicates the low bioaccumulation potential of formaldehyde. This is confirmed by the results of the tests on different species of fish and one species of shrimp in which was not observed bioaccumulation of formaldehyde.

12.4 Mobility in soil

From literature data, the values of log Kow obtained in the various tests, suggest that formaldehyde has a moderate to high mobility in soil.

12.5 Results of PBT and vPvB assessment

Considering all available data on biotic and abiotic degradation, bioaccumulation and toxicity, it can be assessed that Formaldehyde does not meet the PBT criteria (not PBT) and vPvB criteria (not vPvB).

Formaldehyde does not meet the PBT or vPvB criteria.

12.6 Other adverse effects

Adverse effects on the environment are not known

Adverse effects on the environment are not known
