First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove injured person to fresh air, loosen its clothing and place it in a comfortable position. If necessary, administer artificial respiration. In case of complaints, obtain medical help.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothing. Wash contaminated area thoroughly with running water and soap. In case of complaints, obtain medical help.

Eye contact

Flush eyes with water, holding the eyelids apart and moving eyeballs (for at least 15 minutes). Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.

Ingestion

Do not induce vomiting without previous medical advice. Place the victim into a comfortable position. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person, do not induce vomiting. In case of spontaneous vomiting, keep the head down the head of the injured person. IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.

Immediate Medical Attention

IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention. Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Foam, dry chemical, carbon dioxide.

Unsuitable media

Do not use a water jet because it may scatter and spread fire.

Specific hazards

The generation of hazardous combustion products depends largely on the circumstances of combustion. It may for a complex mixture of solid, liquid and gaseous substances, such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of phosphorus, oxides of sulphur and other unidentified chemical mixtures. Inhalation of vapours formed during the fire and inhalation of combustion products can cause serious health problems.

Instructions

Standard procedure for chemical fires. Use extinguishing measures that are appropriate to local circumstances and the surrounding environment. Fire-fighters should exercise extreme caution in enclosed spaces due to the possible presence of toxic decomposition and combustion products.

Firefighter Protection

In the event of fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Self-contained full-face overpressure breathing apparatus should be used in enclosed spaces. Use standard body protective equipment.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Keep unprotected people away, allow only well trained experts wearing suitable protective clothing to abide in the field of accident. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Prevent unauthorised access.

Environmental

The product discharged into the environment or the waste resulting from their use to be treated according to regulations on environmental protection.

Cleanup methods

Absorb spilled product with non-combustible absorbent and place the waste into a closed, properly labelled hazardous waste container till disposal.

Materials: non-combustible absorbent (e.g.: sand, earth)

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Observe basic hygiene measures. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Do not put soaked rags into the pocket of work clothes. Remove contaminated clothing. Keep away from food, drink and feed. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using the product. Wash hands before breaks and after work.

Storage

Product should be stored below the recommended maximum loading / unloading temperature to avoid degradation of product quality and eventually decomposition.

Hygiene

Observe basic hygiene measures. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using the product. Wash hands before breaks and after work.

Fire prevention

Follow preventive measures. Take precautions against static discharge.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Ensure good ventilation of the work station. Before entering storage tanks and commencing any operation in a confined area, carry out an adequate clean-up, and check the atmosphere for oxygen content, flammability, and the presence of sulphur compounds. See also Section 16, "Other information".

Hands

When there is a risk of contact with the skin, use waterproof gloves, resistant to chemical products. Gloves must be felt-lined. Adequate materials: nitrile (NBR) or PVC with a protection index > 5 (permeation time > 240 mins). Use gloves respecting all the conditions and within the limits set by the manufacturer. Replace gloves immediately in case of cuts, holes or other signs of damages or degradation. If necessary, refer to the EN 374 standard.

Eyes

Chemical goggles or face shield. DIN EN 166.

Respiratory

Independently from other possible actions (technical modifications, operating procedures, and other means to limit the exposure of workers), personal protection equipment can be used according to necessity. Open or well ventilated spaces: in presence of oil mists and if the product is handled without adequate containment means: use full or half-face masks with filter for mists/aerosols. In case there is a significant presence of vapours (e.g. through handling at high temperature), use full or half-face masks with filter for hydrocarbon vapours. (EN 136/140/145). Combination filter device (DIN EN 141). Closed or confined areas (e.g. tank interiors): the use of protection measures for airways (masks or self-contained breathing apparatus), must be assessed according to the specific activity, as well as level and duration of predicted exposure. (EN 136/140/145). Approved respiratory protection equipment shall be used in spaces where hydrogen sulphide may accumulate: full face mask with cartridge/filter type "B" (grey for inorganic vapours including H2S) or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). (EN 136/140/145)

Skin/Body

Long-sleeved overalls. If necessary, refer to the EN 340 and related standards, for definition of characteristics and performance according to the risk rating of the area. Antistatic non-skid safety shoes or boots, chemical resistant, if necessary heat resistant and insulated.

Environmental

Do not discharge the product into the environment. Storage areas/installations should be designed with adequate bunds so as to prevent ground and water pollution in case of leaks or spills. Prevent discharge of undissolved substance to or recover from onsite wastewater. Onsite wastewater treatment required. Do not apply industrial sludge to natural soils. Sludge should be incinerated, contained or reclaimed.
