First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

In exceptional conditions of dust formation/inhalation: if breathing is difficult, remove exposed person from contaminated area to fresh air. Keep the person warm and at rest. If not breathing, if breathing is irregular or if respiratory arrest occurs, provide artificial respiration or oxygen by trained personnel. Get medical attention. If unconscious, place in recovery position and get medical attention immediately. Maintain an open airway. Loosen tight clothing such as collar, tie, belt or waistband.

Skin contact

If skin contact occurs, remove contaminated clothing and shoes, and then flush skin with plenty of running water. Clean contaminated shoes and clothing before re-use.

Eye contact

Irrigate with clean water for 15 minutes holding eyelids open. Check for and remove any contact lenses. Seek medical advice if irritation occurs and persists

Ingestion

If swallowed, rinse mouth with water. Remove dentures if any. Move exposed person to fresh air. Keep exposed person warm and at rest. If the person is conscious, give small quantities of water to drink. Stop if the exposed person feels sick as vomiting may be dangerous. If vomiting occurs, the head should be kept low so that vomit does not enter the lungs. Get medical attention if symptoms occur. Maintain an open airway. Loosen tight clothing such as collar, tie, belt or waistband.

Move containers from the spill area. Vacuum or sweep up the material and place it in a designated and labeled waste container. Dispose of through a licensed waste disposal contractor.

Large spill

Move containers from the spill area. Approach the spill from upwind. Prevent entry into sewers, waterways, basements, or confined areas. Trained personnel may vacuum or sweep up the material and place it in a designated and labeled waste container. Avoid creating dusty conditions and prevent wind dispersal. Dispose of through a licensed waste disposal contractor.
