First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove the victim into fresh air - In case of respiratory collapse: apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation - Immediately consult a doctor/medical service - If necessary administer pulmonary resuscitation or oxygen. - Treatment is symptomatic for primary irritation or bronchospasm.

Symptoms: Irritation of the eye, nose, throat en lungs. - Dry/sore throat - Respiratory difficulties - The onset of the respiratory symptoms may be delayed for several hours after exposure.

Skin contact

Wash immediately with lots of water and a mild cleaning agent. - Take victim to a doctor if irritation persists - Remove contaminated clothes - An MDI study has demonstrated that a polyglycol-based skin cleanser or corn oil may be more effective than soap and water.

Symptoms: Irritating to skin. - May cause sensitization by skin contact. - Animal studies have shown that respiratory sensitisation can be induced by skin contact with known respiratory sensitisers including diisocyanates. These results emphasize the need for protective clothing including gloves to be worn at all times when handling these chemicals or in maintenance work.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 15 minutes - Consult a doctor/medical service

Symptoms: Irritating to eyes

Ingestion

Do not induce vomiting - Rinse mouth with water - Consult a doctor/medical service if you feel unwell

Symptoms: Ingestion will cause irritation of the digestive tract.

Immediate Medical Attention

Immediately consult a doctor/medical service

Medical Treatment

Exposure to high concentrations: supervision of a doctor is necessary during at least 48h after an accident happenend. Symptomatic treatment and supportive therapy as indicated.

Combustion products may include: carbon oxides (CO, CO2) nitrogen oxides (NO,NO2 etc.) hydrocarbons and HCN. - Water may react violantly with hot Isocyanate. Due to reaction with water producing CO2-gas, a hazardous build-up of pressure could result if contaminated containers are re-sealed. Containers may burst if overheated.

Instructions

Notify police and fire brigade as soon as possible - Notify experts - Keep upwind - Do not inhale vapour - Shut off leaks if without risks. - Evacuate all personnel that isn't necessary.

Protective clothing - Gloves - Safety glasses - Heat/fire exposure: compressed air/oxygen apparatus

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Use only in well-ventilated areas. Do not inhale vapour. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands immediately after handling the product. Thoroughly clean/dry the installation before use. Personnel with a history of asthma-type conditions, bronchitis or skin sensitisation conditions should not work with MDI based products.

Storage

Keep container tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep away from moisture. Keep away from direct sunlight, heat sources and sources of ignition

Use earthed equipment. Take precautions against electrostatic charges

Hazardous reactions

Due to reaction with water producing CO2-gas. Violent exothermic reaction with water (moisture): pressure build-up may cause closed container to burst. MDI is insoluble with, and heavier than water and sinks to the bottom but reacts slowly at the interface. A solid water-insoluble layer of polyurea is formed at the interface by liberating carbon dioxide gas.
