04

First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove victim to fresh air.

Symptoms: respiratory irritation, difficulty breathing

Skin contact

Wipe away material with a cloth, and wash with soap and water.

Symptoms: irritation

Eye contact

Rinse the eyes with water. Remove any contact lenses and continue flushing with plenty of water for several minutes.

Symptoms: irritation

Ingestion

Give water if swallowed, but do not induce vomiting. Give water again if vomiting occurs.

Symptoms: discomfort

Immediate Medical Attention

Seek medical attention if irritation develops (skin, eye, inhalation) or if discomfort occurs (ingestion).

Medical Treatment

Symptomatic treatment, such as bed rest and possibly aspirin is recommended to provide relief from fever and chills.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Use foam, dry chemical, CO₂ or water spray to extinguish fire. Extinguishing media should be chosen based on the nature of the surrounding fire.

Unsuitable media

Don't use a water jet as this will just spread the fire.

Specific hazards

Spills may be slippery. The use of water spray (fog) whilst effective, may cause frothing and foaming.

Instructions

Cool fire-exposed containers with water spray to prevent bursting.

Firefighter Protection

Fire fighters should wear self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective gear.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Small spill

For small spills, wipe with a cloth and transfer material into a properly labelled container for disposal.

Large spill

For larger spills, scoop up material into container.

Environmental

Prevent spill product from contaminating soil or entering sewerage and drainage systems and bodies of water.

Cleanup methods

Area and residue can be flushed with water.

Materials: cloth

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Observe precautions stated on product label, and follow industry safety regulations.

Storage

Store material indoors in its original, closed container when not in use. Store at temperatures under 49°C. Keep product from freezing. Do not pressurise, cut, weld, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, hot surfaces, sparks, or open flames.

Fire prevention

Do not pressurise, cut, weld, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, hot surfaces, sparks, or open flames.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

General ventilation is usually adequate. Local ventilation is recommended to control exposure from operations that generate levels of oil mist in excess of the ASCC exposure recommendation.

Hands

Neoprene or nitrile rubber gloves if repeated or prolonged skin contact is likely. Refer to AS/NZS 2161 for information on glove selection.

Eyes

Whilst none is required under normal conditions of use, safety glasses should be worn if the method of application presents the likelihood of eye contact. AS1336 and AS/NZS1337 should be consulted for information on eye protection.

Respiratory

None required under normal conditions of use. For concentrations above the exposure standards outlined, an approved half-facepiece respirator equipped with appropriate chemical cartridges may be used. Reference should be made to Australian Standards AS/NZS 1715 – ‘Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Devices’; and AS/NZS 1716 – 'Respiratory Protective Devices.'

Skin/Body

Wear general-duty work clothes and enclosed shoes. Refer to AS/NZS 2210 for advice on Occupational Protective Footwear.
