REACH: Exempted from registration requirement in accordance with the criteria in Annex II of Annex V, “Exemptions from the Obligation to Register” in Accordance with Article 2(7)b under paragraph 8, “Substances which occur in nature other than those listed under paragraph 7, if they are not chemically modified.

04

First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

No particular ventilation requirements.

Skin contact

Wash with excess water and soap. Remove contaminated clothing.

Eye contact

Flush eyes for at least 15 minutes with clean water, lifting lower and upper eyelids occasionally.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth with cold water. Give victim one or two cups of milk to drink.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Water, carbon dioxide, foam or chemical powder

Specific hazards

Fermentation can yield carbon dioxide with possible traces of ethanol or volatile fatty acids (e.g. acetic, propionic, lactic, or butyric) and if exposed to a spark or flame may result in an explosion.

Firefighter Protection

Wear self contained breathing apparatus in case of large fires.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Small spill

Stop the source of the spill. Recover as much product as possible for reuse. Absorb remaining spill and dispose solids in waste container.

Large spill

Stop the source of the spill. Create diversionary structures to minimize the extent of the release. Prevent the release from entering a waterway or sewer. Recover useable product. Absorb remaining spill and dispose of at an approved facility such as a municipal landfill or land application site in accordance with local procedures.

Cleanup methods

Absorb remaining spill

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Molasses remains left in tank can ferment spontaneously using oxygen and creating H₂S in tank atmosphere. If maintenance of tank requires entry by personnel, Confined Space Entry standards and procedures shall be observed and atmosphere testing must be performed prior to tank entry and thereafter daily. If welding is to be performed, the tank should be gas free (LEL < 10%) and only certified welders shall perform welding operations.

Storage

Molasses should be stored in a well-ventilated aboveground storage tank designed to contain material with a specific gravity of 1400 kg/m³ or greater. When using tanks with lower design SG, then reduce filling height appropriately. When stored in IBC, ensure proper ventilation to prevent quality deterioration.
