First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

If symptomatic, move to fresh air. Get medical attention if symptoms persist.

Skin contact

Wash skin with soap and water. If burned by contact with hot material, cool molten material adhering to skin as quickly as possible with water, and see a physician for removal of adhering material and treatment of burn.

Symptoms: symptoms occur after washing. If burned by contact with hot material. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may cause drying, cracking, or irritation.

Eye contact

Any material that contacts the eye should be washed out immediately with water. If easy to do, remove contact lenses. If molten material contacts the eye, immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.

Ingestion

First aid is normally not required. However, if greater than 1/2 liter (pint) ingested, seek medical attention.

Immediate Medical Attention

Get medical attention if symptoms persist (inhalation). Get medical attention promptly if symptoms occur after washing (skin/eye). Get medical attention immediately (molten eye contact). If greater than 1/2 liter (pint) ingested, seek medical attention. Burns should be treated as thermal burns.

Medical Treatment

Burns should be treated as thermal burns.

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.

Hands

Chemical resistant gloves are recommended. When material is heated, wear gloves to protect against thermal burns. Contact glove manufacturer for specific information.

Eyes

Wear safety glasses with side shields (or goggles). Wear a face shield when working with molten material.

Respiratory

If engineering controls do not maintain airborne concentrations below recommended exposure limits (where applicable) or to an acceptable level (in countries where exposure limits have not been established), an approved respirator must be worn. Respirator type: Air-purifying respirator with an appropriate, government approved (where applicable), air-purifying filter, cartridge or canister.

Skin/Body

Wear chemical-resistant gloves, footwear and protective clothing appropriate for risk of exposure.

Environmental

Environmental manager must be informed of all major releases.
