Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove casualty to fresh air and keep warm and at rest. Give oxygen or artificial respiration if necessary. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: In the event of exposure to high concentrations : Dry/sore throat. Cough. irritation of mucous membranes. Risk of delayed pulmonary oedema. Breathing difficulties.

Skin contact

Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. After contact with skin, wash immediately with plenty of water. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Do not remove clothing if it sticks to the skin. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Causes severe burns. The following symptoms may occur: Blisters. Redness, pain. Burning sensation. Prolonged skin contact may cause a severe effect, progressing to a delayed burn.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately carefully and thoroughly with eye-bath or water. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Causes serious eye damage. The following symptoms may occur: Redness, pain. Blurred vision. Blindness.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do not induce vomiting. Get immediate medical advice/attention.

Symptoms: Causes severe burns. Possible esophageal perforation. Bleeding of the gastrointestinal tract. Shock. Loss of consciousness.

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Recommended monitoring procedures :. Personal air monitoring. Room air monitoring : Provide adequate ventilation. Organisational measures to prevent/limit releases, dispersion and exposure. See Section 7 for information on safe handling. Emergency safety showers should be available in the immediate vicinity of any potential exposure. Provide eye shower and label its location conspicuously. Handle substance within a closed system. Emergency eye wash fountains and safety showers should be available in the immediate vicinity of any potential exposure.

Hands

Wear chemically resistant gloves (tested to EN374) . Suitable material: Nitrile rubber. Polyvinylchloride (PVC). neoprene gloves. Thickness > 0,3 mm. Breakthrough time : > 8h. Unsuitable material: Polyvinylalcohol (PVA). The quality of the protective gloves resistant to chemicals must be chosen as a function of the specific working place concentration and quantity of hazardous substances.

Eyes

Use suitable eye protection (EN166): goggles. face shield

Respiratory

In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. Half- face mask (DIN EN 140). full face mask (DIN EN 136). Filter type: B (EN 14387). The filter class must be suitable for the maximum contaminant concentration (gas/vapour/aerosol/particulates) that may arise when handling the product. If the concentration is exceeded, self-contained breathing apparatus must be used. (EN 137)

Skin/Body

Wear suitable protective clothing. Use chemically protective clothing. Overalls, apron and boots recommended.

Environmental

Avoid release to the environment. Comply with applicable Community environmental protection legislation.
