What goes on a CLP label?

Under EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, CLP labels must include specific elements to communicate chemical hazards. The required elements depend on the substance or mixture classification and the container size. Here are the mandatory components:

GHS Pictograms

Red-bordered diamond symbols indicating hazard types: flammable (GHS02), oxidising (GHS03), acute toxicity (GHS06), corrosive (GHS05), health hazard (GHS08), environmental hazard (GHS09), and others. Each pictogram must be at least 1/15th of the label area, with a minimum of 1 cm².

Signal Words & Statements

Either "Danger" (for severe hazards) or "Warning" (for less severe hazards), followed by H-statements describing the hazard nature (e.g., H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour) and P-statements with precautionary measures for safe handling, storage, and disposal.

Product & Supplier Info

The product identifier (chemical name or trade name), supplier details (name, address, phone number), nominal quantity for consumer products, and a UFI code for mixtures that require poison centre notification under CLP Annex VIII.

CLP requirements for e-commerce

Since November 2024, EU Delegated Regulation 2024/197 requires online sellers to display CLP hazard information on product pages before purchase. This applies to all chemical products sold via distance selling, including marketplaces.

Required

GHS pictograms, signal word, and hazard statements must be visible on the product listing page

Required

Product identifier and supplier information must be accessible before checkout

Format

Information must be clearly readable — this widget generates embeddable HTML that meets these requirements

Scope

Applies to all EU member states and all platforms selling chemical products online

Frequently asked questions

What is a CLP label?

A CLP label is a standardized hazard label required under EU Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (Classification, Labelling and Packaging) for chemical substances and mixtures. It includes GHS pictograms, a signal word (Danger or Warning), hazard statements (H-codes), precautionary statements (P-codes), supplier identification, and product identifiers. CLP labels ensure consistent hazard communication across all EU member states and align with the UN Globally Harmonized System (GHS).

Do e-commerce stores need CLP labels?

Yes. Since November 2024, EU Delegated Regulation 2024/197 requires all e-commerce stores selling chemical products in the EU to display CLP hazard information on their product pages before purchase. This includes GHS pictograms, signal words, and hazard statements. The requirement applies to all platforms and marketplaces, not just direct sellers.

What is the difference between H-statements and P-statements?

H-statements (Hazard statements) describe the nature and severity of a chemical hazard (e.g., H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour). P-statements (Precautionary statements) describe measures to minimize exposure, safe storage requirements, and first-aid measures (e.g., P210: Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames). Both are mandatory elements on CLP labels and are sourced from the substance's safety data sheet.

Where do I find the classification data for my product?

The classification data you need is in Section 2 of your product's Safety Data Sheet (SDS). This section contains the GHS classification, pictograms, signal word, and all H- and P-statements. You can search our SDS database or upload your SDS to Chemical Compliance Scanner to extract chemical identifiers automatically.
