ADR Points Calculator

Calculate ADR transport points for dangerous goods according to ADR 1.1.3.6. Find substances by UN number or name, view transport categories with multipliers, and check if your shipment qualifies for exemptions.

How the calculator helps

Transport Categories

View transport categories (0–4) and their multipliers (50, 20, 3, 1) for accurate point calculation according to ADR 1.1.3.6. Each substance is assigned a category based on its hazard severity.

Exemption Limits

Calculate if your transport quantities fall within the 1,000-point exemption threshold. Below 1,000 points, certain ADR requirements like vehicle marking and driver certificates may be relaxed.

Hazard Information

Access detailed hazard classifications, UN numbers, and safety requirements for each substance. Cross-reference with safety data sheets for complete compliance data.

ADR transport categories and multipliers

ADR 1.1.3.6 assigns each dangerous good a transport category (0–4) based on hazard severity. The category determines the multiplier used to calculate transport points. Multiply the net quantity (kg or litres) by the multiplier to get the points for each substance.

Category Multiplier Max Quantity Example
0 50 20 kg/L Explosives, highly toxic gases
1 20 50 kg/L Toxic substances, organic peroxides
2 3 333 kg/L Flammable liquids, corrosives
3 1 1,000 kg/L Flammable solids, minor hazards
4 0 Unlimited Limited quantity goods

How to use

  1. 01 Search for your dangerous goods by UN number or substance name
  2. 02 Click on a substance to view its transport category, multiplier, and hazard details
  3. 03 Enter the quantity being transported to calculate the total ADR points
  4. 04 Compare your total against the 1,000-point threshold to check exemption eligibility

Frequently asked questions

What is ADR 1.1.3.6?

ADR 1.1.3.6 is a provision in the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) that provides exemptions for transporting limited quantities. If the total transport points for a shipment are below 1,000, certain requirements like vehicle marking, driver training certificates, and detailed transport documentation may be relaxed. This is commonly used by companies that only transport small amounts of dangerous goods.

How are transport points calculated?

Multiply the net quantity (in kg for solids or litres for liquids/gases) of each dangerous good by its transport category multiplier: Category 0 = 50, Category 1 = 20, Category 2 = 3, Category 3 = 1. Sum the points for all substances in the transport unit. If the total is below 1,000, the exemption applies. For example, 30 kg of a Category 2 substance = 30 × 3 = 90 points.

What happens if my shipment exceeds 1,000 points?

If your total transport points exceed 1,000, the full ADR requirements apply. This includes proper vehicle placarding and orange plates, an ADR driver training certificate (ADR licence), complete transport documentation (dangerous goods transport document), appropriate emergency equipment on board, and compliance with loading/unloading requirements. Consult a Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) for guidance.

Where do I find the UN number for my substance?

The UN number is found in Section 14 (Transport Information) of the substance's Safety Data Sheet (SDS). You can also use our Chemical Compliance Scanner tool to extract chemical identifiers from documents, or search by substance name directly in this calculator.
