Chemical Name CAS Number Concentration Hazardous
Lead and inorganic lead compounds EC: 231-100-4 7439-92-1 60 - 100% Yes
Sulphuric acid EC: 231-639-5 7664-93-9 10 - 30% Yes

The classification of Lead and inorganic lead compounds have been triggered by the tests from the "1980" for soluble lead acetate. Later tests from 2001, 2005 and 2006 of lead oxide concludes that the lead oxide from the batteries are not toxic to the environment. As a result of this the Risk Phrase R52-53 (Harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment) applies to battery lead oxide and activ mass.

Notes

Lead and inorganic lead compounds are classified as "May cause birth defects (Rep.1)". As this classification does not have its own symbol, lead and leadcompounds have to be labelled with the "skull" symbol. Lead compounds are not classified "toxic". First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Rinse nose and mouth with water.

Skin contact

Remove contaminated clothes, wash with soap and plenty of water. Burns should be treated by a physician.

Eye contact

Rinse immediately with plenty of water for min. 15 minutes (keep the eyelids wide open, remove contact lenses.). If Diphoterine is available, use this instead of water. Contact immediately a doctor/ophthalmologist.

Ingestion

Rinse the mouth with water. Drink water, if possible charcoal suspension. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Contact a doctor immediately.

Immediate Medical Attention

Immediate medical treatment is required when not treated burns will lead to difficult wound healing.

Medical Treatment

Burns should be treated by a physician.

Keep from heat, sparks, and open flame.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Ensure sufficient exhaust or ventilation at the working place.

Hands

Use only protective gloves with CE-marking, category III and according to EN374. Recommended Glove Type: Nitrilerubber. Seek advice by the glove manufacturer to choose the right gloves with consideration to chemicals and penetration time. Recommended penetrating time: > 8 hours. Protection gloves have to be changed regularly, especially with long-lasting contact with the product.

Eyes

Not relevant with normal use. Wear goggles when there is a danger of splashing. Tight-fitting protective goggles or face protection shield. (EN166, EN169).

Respiratory

Normally not necessary. Mask type: B2 filter, sour/inorganic vapour.

Disposal Considerations

Waste treatment methods, disposal recommendations, and waste codes

Treatment

Used lead acid batteries (EWC 16 06 01) is subject to regulation 91/157/EC (Battery Directive) and national regulations on the collection of batteries. They are labeled with the recycling / return symbol, and with a bar over a refuse bin. Discarded lead-acid batteries should not be mixed with other batteries in order not to complicate the treatment. The manufacturers and importers of batteries, respectively the metal dealers take back dead batteries, and render them to the secondary lead smelters for processing
