Emergency First Aid Measures

Critical first aid procedures for chemical exposure incidents and medical emergencies

๐Ÿซ Inhalation Exposure

Move the victim to fresh air. Keep patient warm and at rest. If breathing is labored, administer oxygen. If unconscious, place in recovery position and get medical attention immediately. Maintain open airway. If breathing is irregular or stopped, administer artificial respiration. Call a physician immediately.

Symptoms:

If breathing is labored, irregular or stopped. Symptoms of poisoning may appear several hours later. Toxic if inhaled.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Skin Contact

Take off all contaminated clothing immediately. Wash skin immediately with plenty of water and soap. Subsequent cleansing with polyethyleneglycol 400, then again with water and soap. Carefully clean hair, under the nails, and other hidden areas. Continue to rinse for at least 10 minutes. In case of blueness of lips, skin or nails (cyanosis) let the person breathe oxygen. Consult a physician.

Symptoms:

Blueness of lips, skin or nails (cyanosis). Harmful in contact with skin. Skin irritation.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Eye Contact

Irrigate copiously with clean, fresh water for at least 10 minutes, holding the eyelids apart. Remove contact lenses. Protect unharmed eye. If eye irritation persists, consult a specialist.

Symptoms:

Serious eye irritation. If eye irritation persists.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Ingestion/Swallowing

Induce vomiting, but only if victim is fully conscious. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Rinse mouth with water. Give 1 glass of water to drink (ca 200 ml). Keep patient warm and at rest. If vomiting occurs, the head should be kept low so that vomit does not enter the lungs. Call a physician immediately.

Symptoms:

Toxic if swallowed. Methaemoglobinemia.

๐Ÿšจ Immediate Medical Attention Required

Get medical attention immediately. If unconscious, get medical attention immediately. Call a physician immediately.

Medical Treatment

Elementary aid, decontamination, symptomatic treatment and depending on the formation of methaemoglobin: intravenous administration of toluidine blue or other redox dyes according to dosage specifications plus ascorbic acid.
