Composition / Information on Ingredients

Chemical components, concentration ranges, and hazardous substance identification

Type mixture

Mixture of substances listed below with nonhazardous additions. Aqueous solution of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide: largely dissociated into ammonium ions (NH4+) and hydrogen sulphide (HS-).

Chemical Name CAS Number Concentration Hazardous
Hydrogen sulphide EC: 231-977-3 7783-06-4 25% Yes
ammonia EC: 215-647-6 1336-21-6 20% Yes

For the wording of the listed hazard phrases refer to section 16.

Notes

Aqueous solution of ammonia and hydrogen sulphide: largely dissociated into ammonium ions (NH4+) and hydrogen sulphide (HS-). This product is therefore not a 'substance' (chemical element and its compounds) in the REACH definition. The registered substances are ammonia and hydrogen sulphide.

04

First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Supply fresh air or oxygen; call for doctor. In case of unconsciousness place patient stably in side position for transportation.

Symptoms: Mists, vapours, droplets or sprays can cause irritation to the respiratory system.

Skin contact

Treat affected skin with cotton wool or cellulose. Then wash and rinse thoroughly with water and a mild cleaning agent. If skin irritation continues, consult a doctor. Immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly for at least 15 min.

Symptoms: Repeated or continuous contact with the skin may cause irritation, dermatitis or sensitisation.

Eye contact

Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water. Then consult a doctor.

Symptoms: Mists, vapours, droplets or sprays can cause irritation to the eyes.

Ingestion

If victim is conscious: Rinse mouth. Do not induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do not induce vomiting; call for medical help immediately. Drink plenty of water and provide fresh air. Call for a doctor immediately.

Symptoms: When swallowed, hydrogen sulphide is formed in the stomach due to the acidic pH value.

Immediate Medical Attention

Involve doctor immediately.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Powder, CO2, Water spray

Unsuitable media

Never use direct water jet, since this can lead to a strong evaporation and violent extrusion.

Specific hazards

The solution is easily flammable. Vapour air mixture forms explosion-dangerous mixtures. The formation of dangerous gases or vapours e. g. hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), nitrous gases (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) must be expected. Vapours are heavier than air. During heating or in case of fire poisonous gases are produced. Increase of pressure and danger of explosion in case of heating up of the containers.

Instructions

Water spray may be used to keep fire exposed containers cool. If possible remove containers from the danger area. Burning liquids can be extinguished by diluting with water. Pay attention to reignition. Fight escaping vapours with water spray.

Firefighter Protection

Wear self-contained respiratory protective device. Mouth respiratory protective device.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Check for gas alarm both acoustic and optical; if so, keep out of areas indicated with sign 'hazardous vapours', follow emergency plan or evacuation. Have emergency equipment ready for absorbing spillage. Check for complete evacuation of people; have ventilation sufficient to avoid explosive atmosphere; ignition sources to be checked for and removed; check for static electricity; check for leaks and sources of H2S vapour.

Small spill

Convert small quantities with a solution of 1% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into sulphate.

Large spill

Pump off larger quantities.

Environmental

Polluted wash water has to be hold back and disposed of. Prevent entry into watercourses, sewers (explosion hazard!) and soil.

Cleanup methods

Absorb spillage with liquid-binding material, aerate affected area and clean contaminated objects and floor thoroughly.

Materials: Sand, Chemizorb, Kieselgur, Rench Rapid, sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust

07

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Open and handle receptacle with care. Prevent formation of aerosols.

Storage

Store in original container unopened. Keep container tightly closed. Store cool, away from sources of ignition or heat, in ventilated area. Ventilation according to local administrative requirements. Check for feasibility of fast and safe evacuation. Safety labeling of containers and storage areas. Wear PPE with independent air supply for breathing. For charging and discharging use strictly tight equipment and an exhaust ventilation system. Avoid access of air and oxygen.

Fire prevention

Keep ignition sources away - Do not smoke. Protect against electrostatic charges.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Ensure adequate ventilation especially in closed rooms. Provide local ventilation appropriate to the product decomposition risk. Monitor air concentrations at the workplace. Apply technical measures to comply with the occupational exposure limits: ventilation, closed systems with lower pressure. Use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to keep air levels below recommended exposure limits. Make regular concentration measurements at the workplace. A warning system for gases is recommended. In closed rooms in particular at increased temperature provide sufficient ventilation.

Hands

Wear gloves. Adequate material: butyl rubber (0.5 mm), fluororubber (0.4 mm), penetration time of glove material: > 8 h with permanent contact. The glove material has to be impermeable and resistant to the product/ the substance/ the preparation. Material of gloves: Butyl rubber, BR, Fluorocarbon rubber (Viton).

Eyes

Face protection. Tightly sealed goggles.

Respiratory

While handling a personal H2S-detector is recommended. Suitable protective mask to be held ready at the workplace. It is suggested to wear personal H2S-Detector during handling. Carry emergency gas mask for escape. If vapours or aerosols occur full mask with combination filter is necessary (type ABEK-P2). In case of brief exposure or low pollution use respiratory filter device. In case of intensive or longer exposure use self-contained respiratory protective device. Mandatory mask.

Skin/Body

Wear suitable chemical protection suit (alkali-resistant) to prevent skin contact. Wear flame-retardant, antistatic protective clothing.
