First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

In case of breathing difficulties, remove the patient to fresh air. Get medical help if necessary.

Skin contact

Rinse affected areas of skin under running water for 10 min. Remove wet clothing, ensuring self-protection whilst doing so. Do not attempt neutralisation. In case of prolonged irritation symptoms: provide medical attention.

Eye contact

With the uninjured eye protected, rinse the injured eye under running water for 10 min with the lids wide open. Provide medical attention. After exposure to concentrated solution, transport to the ophthalmologist as soon as possible whilst continuing to rinse the eye.

Ingestion

Drink water immediately. Maximum 2 tumblers. Do not induce vomiting. Consult a doctor.

Immediate Medical Attention

In case of unconsciousness seek medical advice. Get medical help if necessary. Provide medical attention. Transport to the ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Consult a doctor.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Citric acid solution is non-flammable. Tailor extinguishing measures to the surrounding fire.

Unsuitable media

Full water jet

Firefighter Protection

In case of fire, wear self-contained breathing apparatus.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Wash wet surfaces immediately with plenty of water. Avoid contact with eyes.

Small spill

Small quantities are to be diluted with water then neutralised.

Large spill

Large quantities are to be absorbed with sand, diatomaceous earth or expanded mica and their disposal effected in a sealed container.

Environmental

Do not allow the substance to enter the sewer system. A risk to drinking water is possible only in the event that very large quantities infiltrate the subsoil and waters.

Cleanup methods

Cleaning method dependent on quantity of liquid released. Small quantities are to be diluted with water then neutralised.

Materials: sand, diatomaceous earth or expanded mica

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Ensure good ventilation of the work station. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray. Wear personal protective equipment. Prevent aerosol formation or splashes. Keep away from ignition sources. Wash your hands before and during work. Remove clothing that is contaminated with the product and wash it before using again. It is forbidden to eat and drink anything in the application area. Do not smoke.

Storage

Store tightly sealed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Protect from frost and excessive heat.

Hygiene

It is imperative that industrial hygiene standards are adhered to. Wash your hands before and during work. Remove clothing that is contaminated with the product and wash it before using again. It is forbidden to eat and drink anything in the application area. Do not smoke.

Fire prevention

Avoid open flames, direct sunlight and other sources of ignition. Protect against electrostatic charges.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Ensure sufficient ventilation during production.

Hands

Required in the case of contact with 50% citric acid solution. Glove material: Natural rubber, natural latex (0.5 mm, ≥ 8 h); Polychloroprene (0.5 mm, ≥ 8 h). The protective gloves to be used must comply with the specifications of EC directive 89/686/EEC and the resulting standard EN 374, for example KCL 740 Dermatril.

Eyes

Required in the case of contact with citric acid solution; use frame goggles with side protection. Provide an eye shower.

Respiratory

Use suitable respiratory masks in places where there is not sufficient ventilation during production.

Skin/Body

Long-sleeved work clothing.
