First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Move to fresh air. Do not leave the victim unattended. Keep patient warm and at rest. Immediately seek medical attention. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If unconscious, place in recovery position and seek medical advice. In the event of unconsciousness, apnea or cardiac arrest (no pulse), apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Symptoms: Vapors may cause drowsiness and dizziness. Irritating to respiratory system. Symptoms are characterized by coughing, choking, or shortness of breath and may cause transient central nervous system (CNS) depression. May cause respiratory irritation.

Skin contact

Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes.

Symptoms: Causes moderate skin irritation. Causes mild skin irritation.

Eye contact

Flush eyes with water thoroughly and continuously for 15 minutes. Remove contact lenses. Protect unharmed eye. Keep eye wide open while rinsing. If eye irritation persists, consult a specialist.

Symptoms: Moderate eye irritation. May cause irritation to the eyes. This irritation can result in redness and swelling of the eyes.

Ingestion

Clean mouth with water and drink afterwards plenty of water. Do NOT induce vomiting. Do not give milk or alcoholic beverages. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If vomiting does occur, have victim lean forward to reduce risk of aspiration. Get medical attention immediately.

Symptoms: Harmful: may cause lung damage if swallowed. Risk of serious damage to the lungs (by aspiration). May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways.

Immediate Medical Attention

Immediately seek medical attention if inhaled. If unconscious, place in recovery position and seek medical advice. In the event of unconsciousness, apnea or cardiac arrest (no pulse), apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation. If eye irritation persists, consult a specialist. Get medical attention immediately if swallowed.

Medical Treatment

In case of ingestion, the stomach should be emptied by gastric lavage under qualified medical supervision.

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Engineering controls, preferably enclosed systems, should be used whenever feasible to maintain exposures below acceptable criteria. When such controls are not feasible, or sufficient to achieve full conformance, other engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation should be used.

Hands

The selected protective gloves have to satisfy the standard EN 374 derived from it. The suitability for a specific workplace should be discussed with the producers of the protective gloves. Gloves should be discarded and replaced if there is any indication of degradation or chemical breakthrough.

Respiratory

Approved respiratory protection equipment is recommended where inhalation exposure is likely.

Skin/Body

When skin contact is possible, protective clothing including gloves, apron, sleeves, boots, head and face protection should be worn. Choose body protection according to the amount and concentration of the dangerous substance at the work place. Use PPE that is chemical resistant to the product and prevents skin contact.
