Composition / Information on Ingredients
Chemical components, concentration ranges, and hazardous substance identification
Liquid product from various refinery streams; in general, the heaviest streams from the different operations of distillation and craking. The composition is complex and varies with the source of the crude oil. Bunker fuels are composed of products of paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic origin. They may contain sulphur derivatives and organic acids. Bunker fuels are intermediate fuels. Viscosity varies, ranging from 30 to 700cst at 50C.
| Chemical Name | CAS Number | Concentration | Hazardous |
|---|---|---|---|
| fuel oil, residual EC: 270-675-6 | 68476-33-5 | 100% | Yes |
Notes
Contains a high proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons, including polycyclic 4-ring to 6-ring hydrocarbons.
First Aid Measures
Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents
In case of exposure to intense concentrations of vapours, fumes or spray, transport the person away from the contaminated zone, keep warm and allow to rest. If breathing is difficult: call a doctor and apply mechanical ventilation immediately.
Immediately remove all stained or splashed clothing on condition that it is not adhering to the skin. Wash immediately and abundantly with soap and water. In case of burns : COOL THE AFFECTED AREA IMMEDIATELY AND REPEATEDLY WITH COLD WATER for at least 10 minutes. If the burn appears serious, do not attempt to remove the product adhering to the skin. Transport to a specialised medical centre for emergency care.
In case of contact with the hot product, COOL THE EYE IMMEDIATELY AND COPIOUSLY WITH COLD WATER for 10 minutes, keeping the eye open if possible. Take the person to a specialised medical centre.

Exposure Controls / PPE
Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment
Worker exposure must not be permanent and must be limited to the strict minimum for each individual. Use the product in a properly ventilated atmosphere. When working in confined spaces (tanks, containers, etc.), ensure that there is a supply of air suitable for breathing and wear the recommended equipment.
Hydrocarbon-proof gloves for aromatic hydrocarbons. recommended material: nitrile, neoprene. Gloves anti-heat for the liquefied product (EN 407, level 1).
Helmet with face mask.
Protective engineering solutions should be implemented and in use before personal protective equipment is considered. To enter tankers, tanks, reservoirs where the oxygen content is too low, wear insulating respiratory apparatus. In an emergency or for exceptional short-lasting jobs in an atmosphere polluted by the product, it is necessary to wear self-contained breathing apparatus. The use of breathing apparatus must comply strictly with the manufacturers instructions and the regulations governing their choices and uses.
Wear single use overwall. Hydrocarbon resistant clothing. Recommended material: polyethylene. PVC boots
