First Aid Measures
Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents
In case of unconsciousness place patient stably in side position for transportation.
Symptoms: May cause sensitization by inhalation. Lachrymation, burning sensation of eyes, nose and throat, bleeding from the nose, weakness, coughing, rhinitis, irritation of respiratory tract and weakness of breathing. Coughing, headache, indisposition, shortness of breath. Possibly irritating action by sensitization. Extremely corrosive action on mucous membranes of upper respiratory tract.
Immediately wash with water and soap and rinse thoroughly.
Symptoms: Sensitization possible through skin contact. After prolonged action severe corrosion of skin with poorly healing wounds, possibly damage of kidneys. Burning of eyes, mucous membranes and skin. Strong irritating/corrosive action. Contact with hot melt causes severe burning and corrosion. After contact with this material possibly corrosive action on skin and mucous membranes.
Call a doctor immediately. Remove contact lenses immediately! Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water.
Symptoms: Lachrymation, burning sensation of eyes, sensitizing action, especially on the eyes followed by visual defects, danger of conjunctivitis. Burning of eyes, mucous membranes. Strong irritation with danger of serious damage to eyes. High concentration of dust and vapors causes severe damage of the eyes. Extremely corrosive action on mucous membranes as well as eyes.
Call for a doctor immediately. Drink plenty of water and provide fresh air. Call for a doctor immediately.
Symptoms: After swallowing headache, vomiting, abdominal pain.
Immediate Medical Attention
A 24-hour medical surveillance period is recommended in all cases of exposure to this substance, even in the absence of immediate signs of symptoms.
Medical Treatment
Symptomatic treatment.
Firefighting Measures
Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection
Alcohol resistant foam Carbon dioxide Water. Foam. Extinguishing powder.
Do not use water jet with hot melt: Steam explosion with propagation of material. Do not use extinguishing powder, hot maleic anhydride may thermally decompose or explode because of impurities.
Formation of explosive dust/air-mixtures is possible. Strong heating may cause formation of potentially explosive vapours.
Firefighter Protection
Wear self-contained respiratory protective device. Chemical resistant protective suit. Under the protective suit a fire protective suit according to EN 469 should be applied. Use chemical protective suit and self contained breathing apparatus while undressing contaminated co-workers or handling contaminated equipment.
Accidental Release Measures
Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection
Wear protective clothing. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Keep people at a distance and stay on the windward side. Access only for trained personnel with personal protective equipment. Use respiratory protective device against the effects of fumes/dust/aerosol. Ensure adequate ventilation.
Do not allow to enter sewers/ surface or ground water. Keep contaminated washing water and dispose of appropriately.
Use neutralising agent. Absorb with liquid-binding material (sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust). Ensure adequate ventilation. Let spilled melt cool and solidify, then take up mechanically.
Materials: liquid-binding material (sand, diatomite, acid binders, universal binders, sawdust)

Handling and Storage
Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements
Empty containers must not be used for other products. Contaminated protective equipment should be cleaned before taking it off. Any unavoidable deposit of dust must be completely removed. Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace. Prevent formation of aerosols. All apparatus must be grounded. Protect from humidity. Use additional container if material is transported in glass bottles. Fill only in dedicated and assigned containers. Keep containers tightly sealed.
Store in a dry location, keep away from humidity. Store in a cool location. Use only receptacles specifically permitted for this substance/product. Protect from humidity and water.
Contaminated protective equipment should be cleaned before taking it off.
Protect against electrostatic charges.
Exposure Controls / PPE
Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment
Handling of material under inert gas and protected from humidity. Sufficient ventilation is recommended. Check seals on flanges and valves for suitability and corrosion resistance. If necessary inspection intervals should be defined! Handle this material under exclusion of humidity. Waste gases should be led into the atmosphere only via appropriate separators, scrubbers or incinerators. If possible use this material only in closed systems and devices. In case of open plant systems (sampling devices, filling and discharging, cleansing works etc.) use local exhaust and collecting trays. Handling and use of this material/formulation only under controlled conditions in closed systems.
Selection of the glove material on consideration of the penetration times, rates of diffusion and the degradation. Information given in the Exposure Scenarios in the annex have to be observed. Indicated figures for time are recorded at 22°C and long-lasting contact. Increased temperatures caused by warm substances, body heat etc. and a reduction of thickness by extension of material may result in a decreased penetration time. A 1,5-fold increased/decreased thickness doubles/halves the penetration time. Figures are valid only for pure substances. Transfer to mixtures of substances is valid only as qualitative information. For the permanent contact gloves made of the following materials are suitable: Do not wear gloves made from the following materials longer than 8 hours: Baypren-Viton. Check for tightness before use. Replace damaged gloves.
Tightly sealed goggles.
Short term filter device: Particle filter. The filter grade (P1 - P3) has to be established depending on work-place related limit values and the actual exposition. Information given in the Exposure Scenarios in the annex have to be observed.
Use only liquid proof and chemical resistant protective suit. Use protective suit with self-contained breathing apparatus.
Avoid spillage of product into the environment. If possible use this material only in closed systems and devices. In case of open plant systems (sampling devices, filling and discharging, cleansing works etc.) use local exhaust and collecting trays. Follow emission limit values. Measures in case of unwanted emissions should be established. Measures for prevention of hazards in case of unwanted leakage (LOPC) shall be implemented.

Stability and Reactivity
Chemical stability, hazardous reactions, and incompatible materials
No decomposition if used according to specifications.
Maleic anhydride reacts with sodium, potassium, ammonia salt solutions and hydroxides with formation of carbon dioxide. Above 150°C MAN decomposes and polymerizes under the influence of small amounts of alkali compounds or amines. Vigorous reaction with strong oxidising agents. Hydrolyses with water forming maleic acid. Reacts violently with water. Possible formation of explosive mixtures with air upon strong heating.
