Composition / Information on Ingredients

Chemical components, concentration ranges, and hazardous substance identification

Type mixture

Due to the presence of crystalline silica, care should be taken during operations which could lead to the generation of respirable dust. There are no additional ingredients present which, within the current knowledge of the supplier and in the concentrations applicable, are classified as hazardous to health or the environment, are PBTs or vPvBs or have been assigned a workplace exposure limit and hence require reporting in this section.

Chemical Name CAS Number Concentration Hazardous
Silicon carbide EC: 206-991-8 409-21-2 35 - 50% No
Aluminium Oxide EC: 215-691-6 1344-28-1 5 - 10% No
Silica, vitreous EC: 262-373-8 60676-86-0 5 - 10% No
cristobalite EC: 238-455-4 14464-46-1 5 - 10% No
Fumes, silica EC: 273-761-1 69012-64-2 1 - 5% No

There are no additional ingredients present which, within the current knowledge of the supplier and in the concentrations applicable, are classified as hazardous to health or the environment, are PBTs or vPvBs or have been assigned a workplace exposure limit and hence require reporting in this section.

Notes

Due to the presence of crystalline silica, care should be taken during operations which could lead to the generation of respirable dust.

First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Move exposed person to fresh air. If not breathing, if breathing is irregular or if respiratory arrest occurs, provide artificial respiration or oxygen by trained personnel. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Symptoms: respiratory tract irritation, coughing, irritation of the nose, throat and lungs

Skin contact

Flush contaminated skin with plenty of water. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Symptoms: No known significant effects or critical hazards.

Eye contact

Check for and remove any contact lenses. Flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical attention if irritation occurs.

Symptoms: irritation, redness, exposure to airborne concentrations above statutory or recommended exposure limits may cause irritation of the eyes

Ingestion

Wash out mouth with water. Do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Symptoms: No known significant effects or critical hazards.

Immediate Medical Attention

Get medical attention if symptoms occur.

Medical Treatment

Treat symptomatically.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Use an extinguishing agent suitable for the surrounding fire.

Unsuitable media

None known.

Specific hazards

No specific fire or explosion hazard.

Instructions

Promptly isolate the scene by removing all persons from the vicinity of the incident if there is a fire. No action shall be taken involving any personal risk or without suitable training.

Firefighter Protection

Fire-fighters should wear appropriate protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with a full face-piece operated in positive pressure mode. Clothing for fire-fighters (including helmets, protective boots and gloves) conforming to European standard EN 469 will provide a basic level of protection for chemical incidents.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Evacuate surrounding areas. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering. Do not touch or walk through spilt material.

Environmental

Avoid dispersal of spilt material and runoff and contact with soil, waterways, drains and sewers.

Cleanup methods

Vacuum or sweep up material and place in a designated, labelled waste container.

07

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (see Section 8). Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material is handled, stored and processed. Avoid breathing dust.

Storage

Store in accordance with local regulations. Store in original container protected from direct sunlight in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials (see section 10) and food and drink. Keep container tightly closed and sealed until ready for use. Containers that have been opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage.

Hygiene

Eating, drinking and smoking should be prohibited in areas where this material is handled, stored and processed. Workers should wash hands and face before eating, drinking and smoking. Remove contaminated clothing and protective equipment before entering eating areas.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Use only with adequate ventilation. If user operations generate dust, fumes, gas, vapour or mist, use process enclosures, local exhaust ventilation or other engineering controls to keep worker exposure to airborne contaminants below any recommended or statutory limits.

Hands

Chemical-resistant, impervious gloves complying with an approved standard should be worn at all times when handling chemical products if a risk assessment indicates this is necessary. >8 hours (breakthrough time): EN388 : Gloves, mechanical-resistant.

Eyes

If operating conditions cause high dust concentrations to be produced, use dust goggles. EN166 : Safety glasses or goggles. Recommended: EN166 : Safety glasses or goggles.

Respiratory

Use appropriate respiratory protection if there is a risk of exceeding any exposure limits. Possible: EN149 - FFP2 : Filtering half-masks to protect against particulates.

Skin/Body

Personal protective equipment for the body should be selected based on the task being performed and the risks involved and should be approved by a specialist before handling this product. Recommended: Work uniform or laboratory coat. Appropriate footwear and any additional skin protection measures should be selected based on the task being performed and the risks involved and should be approved by a specialist before handling this product. Recommended: Suitable protective footwear.

Environmental

Emissions from ventilation or work process equipment should be checked to ensure they comply with the requirements of environmental protection legislation. In some cases, fume scrubbers, filters or engineering modifications to the process equipment will be necessary to reduce emissions to acceptable levels.
