Composition / Information on Ingredients

Chemical components, concentration ranges, and hazardous substance identification

Type mixture

Based on manganese metal powder with additions of aluminium powder.

Chemical Name CAS Number Concentration Hazardous
Manganese EC: 231-105-1 7439-96-5 74 - 76% No

First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove from exposure to fresh air immediately. If respiratory irritation develops or if breathing is difficult get medical aid.

Symptoms: respiratory irritation, difficulty breathing

Skin contact

Immediately wash skin with plenty of soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Get medical aid if irritation develops and persists.

Eye contact

Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid if irritation develops and persists.

Ingestion

Give 3-4 cups of water, but do not induce vomiting unless directed to do so by medical personnel. If vomiting occurs, give fluid again. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical aid immediately.

Immediate Medical Attention

Get medical aid immediately (for ingestion). Get medical aid if irritation develops and persists (for eyes, skin, and inhalation).

Medical Treatment

Treat symptomatically and supportively.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Smother with dry sand, dry clay, dry ground limestone (CaCO₃), or use approved Class D extinguishers.

Unsuitable media

DO NOT USE WATER! Do NOT get water inside containers. Do NOT use CO₂ or halogenated extinguishing agents.

Specific hazards

Water Reactive. Material will react with water and may release a flammable and/or toxic gas. Dust can be an explosion hazard when exposed to heat or flame. May ignite or explode on contact with steam or moist air. Aluminium powder may evolve hydrogen gas in contact with water and finely divided dust may be ignited by naked lights or sparks. Bulk dust when damp with water may heat spontaneously. Hazard greater as fineness increases.

Instructions

Contact professional fire-fighters immediately.

Firefighter Protection

As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full protective gear.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section.

Cleanup methods

Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable, dry disposal container.

07

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Do not allow water to get into the container because of violent reaction. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid ingestion and inhalation. Do not allow contact with water. Keep from contact with moist air and steam.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Keep away from water.

Hygiene

Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.

Fire prevention

Keep away from sources of ignition.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped with an eyewash facility. Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation if airborne concentrations reach permissible exposure limits. Use explosive proof ventilation equipment. Do not allow dust accumulation on pipes, structural components and walkways.

Hands

Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin exposure.

Eyes

Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical safety goggles as described by European standard EN 166 or OSHA’s eye and face protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133.

Respiratory

Whenever workplace conditions warrant a respiratory use a respiratory protection program has to be followed that meets European Standard EN 149 or OSHA’s respirator regulations in 29 CFR 1910.134.

Skin/Body

Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin exposure.
