First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. Remove to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if necessary. If breathing is difficult, go oxygen.

Skin contact

Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water. Wash areas of contact with plenty of water. Flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician if irritation develops.

Symptoms: May be absorbed through the skin. May cause irritation, allergic reaction and symptoms similar to inhalation. Will stain areas of contact.

Eye contact

Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Irrigate immediately with large quantity of water for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician if irritation develops.

Symptoms: May cause irritation, redness, pain, and tearing.

Ingestion

Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Dilute immediately with water or milk. Vomiting may occur spontaneously, but DO NOT INDUCE. If vomiting occurs, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration into lungs. Call a physician immediately.

Immediate Medical Attention

Immediately call a POISON CENTER or physician.

Medical Treatment

Specific treatment (Wash areas of contact with water). Give artificial respiration if necessary. If breathing is difficult, go oxygen.

05

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Water, water spray, foam, or dry chemical.

Specific hazards

Picric Acid raw material is explosive. Picric Acid can decompose explosively in a fire. It forms salts (picrates) rather easily and many of its salts are more sensitive explosives than Picric Acid itself.

Firefighter Protection

Use protective clothing and breathing equipment appropriate for the surrounding fire.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Cleanup methods

Absorb the spill

Materials: Sodium Bicarbonate or a soda ash-sand mixture (10:90)

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Store locked up. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Do not ingest. Do not breathe dust. Avoid shock and friction.

Storage

Store locked up. Protect from freezing and physical damage. Do not allow this material to dry out. Do not let dry picric acid (crystals) form in container or on the cap threads of container. Keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition. Keep away from direct sunlight or strong incandescent light.

Hygiene

Wash hands thoroughly after handling.

Fire prevention

Keep away from heat. Keep away from sources of ignition. Ground all equipment containing material. Take precautionary measures against electrostatic discharges.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

No specific controls are needed. Normal room ventilation is adequate.

Hands

Chemical resistant gloves.

Eyes

Safety glasses or goggles.

Respiratory

Normal room ventilation is adequate.

Skin/Body

Wear protective gloves and eye protection.
