First Aid Measures

Emergency procedures for chemical exposure incidents

Inhalation

If experiencing respiratory symptoms: Call a poison center or a doctor. If breathing is difficult, remove to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. It may be dangerous to the person providing aid to give mouth-to mouth resuscitation. Give oxygen or artificial respiration if necessary. Users of breathing apparatus must be trained.

Symptoms: May cause headache, nausea and irritation of respiratory tract. Vomiting.

Skin contact

Take off immediately all contaminated clothing and wash it before reuse. Immediately call a POISON CENTER/doctor. IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of soap and water.

Symptoms: irritation (itching, redness, blistering).

Eye contact

IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Immediately consult a doctor/medical service. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.

Symptoms: Slight irritation.

Ingestion

If swallowed, rinse mouth with water (only if the person is conscious). Immediately call a POISON CENTER/doctor. Do NOT induce vomiting. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Stop if the exposed person feels sick as vomiting may be dangerous. If vomiting occurs, keep head lower than hips to prevent aspiration.

Symptoms: May cause: Disturbances of consciousness.

Immediate Medical Attention

Immediately call a POISON CENTER/doctor.

Medical Treatment

Treat according to symptoms (decontamination, vital functions), no known specific antidote.

Firefighting Measures

Extinguishing media, specific hazards, and firefighter protection

Suitable media

Foam. dry chemical powder. Alcohol resistant foam. Carbon oxides (CO, CO2).

Unsuitable media

Do not use a heavy water stream.

Specific hazards

On burning: release of harmful/irritant gases/vapours. Flammable liquid and vapour. Hazardous combustion products. carbon oxides (CO and CO2). Evolution of fumes. On burning: release of harmful gases/vapours.

Instructions

Cool tanks/drums with water spray/remove them into safety. Evacuate personnel to a safe area. Take account of environmentally hazardous firefighting water.

Firefighter Protection

Appropriate self-contained breathing apparatus may be required. Fire-resistant protective clothing.

06

Accidental Release Measures

Spill cleanup procedures, containment, and environmental protection

Emergency procedures

Avoid all eye and skin contact and do not breathe vapour and mist. Eliminate every possible source of ignition. Explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed. No flames, no sparks. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Do not smoke. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. May be dangerously slippery if spilled. Evacuate personnel to a safe area.

Environmental

Avoid release to the environment.

Cleanup methods

Shovel or sweep up and put in a closed container for disposal.

Materials: non-combustible absorbent materials, e.g sand, earth, vermiculite, diatomaceous earth

07

Handling and Storage

Safe handling precautions, storage conditions, and workplace requirements

Handling

Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do not breathe gas, fumes, vapour or spray. Ensure there is adequate ventilation. Heating can release hazardous gases. Keep away from ignition sources/sparks. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Ground/bond container and receiving equipment. Use explosion-proof electrical equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. In use, may form flammable vapour-air mixture. Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. Handle empty containers with care because residual vapours are flammable.

Storage

Keep away from ignition sources (including static discharges). Store in tightly closed, properly ventilated containers away from heat, sparks, open flame, strong oxidizers, radiations, and other initiators. Protect against frost. Store locked up. Keep in a cool, well-ventilated place. Keep out of direct sunlight.

Hygiene

Emergency eye wash fountains should be available in the immediate vicinity of any potential exposure. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice.

Fire prevention

Keep away from ignition sources/sparks. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Ground/bond container and receiving equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. No flames, no sparks. Eliminate all sources of ignition.

08

Exposure Controls / PPE

Occupational exposure limits, engineering controls, and protective equipment

Engineering

Good ventilation of the workplace required. If these are not sufficient to maintain concentrations of particulates and/or solvent vapours below the relevant occupational exposure limits, suitable respiratory protective equipment should be worn. At high temperatures: Both local exhaust and good general room ventilation must be provided not only to control exposure but also to prevent formation of flammable mixtures. Use spark-explosionproof appliances and lighting system.

Hands

Suitable chemical resistant safety gloves (EN 374) also with prolonged, direct contact (Recommended: Protective index 6, corresponding >480 minutes of permeation time according to EN 374): E.g. nitrile rubber (0.4 mm), chloroprene rubber (0.5 mm), butyl rubber (0.7 mm) and other. Supplementary note: The specifications are based on tests, literature data and information of glove manufacturers or are derived from similar substances by analogy. Due to many conditions (e.g. temperature) it must be considered, that the practical usage of a chemical-protective glove in practice may be much shorter than the permeation time determined through testing

Eyes

Safety glasses with side-shields (frame goggles) (e.g. EN 166)

Respiratory

Insufficient ventilation: wear respiratory protection. Avoid all eye and skin contact and do not breathe vapour and mist. Wear respiratory protection. Where exposure through inhalation may occur from use, approved respiratory protection equipment is recommended.

Skin/Body

Wear anti-static discharges clothing and shoes. Foresee ground with earth. rubber. Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting boots, chemical-protection suit (according to EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of dust)

Environmental

Assure that emissions are compliant with all applicable air pollution control regulations.
