Emergency First Aid Measures
Critical first aid procedures for chemical exposure incidents and medical emergencies
๐ซ Inhalation Exposure
Remove source of contamination or have victim move to fresh air. If not breathing, ensure clear airway and institute cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen if available. Obtain medical advice immediately.
Symptoms:
If symptoms are experienced
๐๏ธ Skin Contact
As quickly as possible, flush with lukewarm, gently flowing water for at least 20 minutes, or until the chemical is removed. Under running water, remove contaminated clothing, shoes and leather goods (e.g. watchbands and belts). Obtain medical attention immediately. Completely decontaminate clothing, shoes and leather goods before re-use or discard.
๐๏ธ Eye Contact
Immediately flush the contaminated eye(s) with lukewarm, gently flowing water for at least 5 minutes or until the chemical is removed, while holding the eyelid(s) open. Obtain medical advice immediately.
๐ฝ๏ธ Ingestion/Swallowing
Never give anything by mouth if victim is rapidly losing consciousness, is unconscious or convulsing. Have victim rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Do not induce vomiting. Have victim drink 240 to 300 ml (8 to 10 ozs) of water. If vomiting occurs naturally, have victim lean forward to reduce risk of aspiration. Repeat administration of water. Rinse mouth. Give slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Obtain medical attention immediately.
๐จ Immediate Medical Attention Required
Obtain medical advice immediately (for inhalation, eye contact, ingestion). Obtain medical attention immediately (for skin contact). Consult a doctor and/or the nearest Poison Control Centre for all exposures, except minor instances of inhalation or skin contact.
Medical Treatment
In the unlikely event of ingestion of MTBE, appropriate lavage procedures should be considered to avoid accidental aspiration of the product.

๐ญ Engineering Controls
Ventilation and other forms of engineering controls are often the preferred means for controlling chemical exposures.
๐งค Hand Protection
wear appropriate chemical protective gloves.
๐๏ธ Eye Protection
Avoid eye contact with this material. Wear safety glasses or chemical goggles. Provide an eyewash station in the work area. Do not wear contact lenses when working with this substance.
๐ท Respiratory Protection
If exposure limits are exceeded or if irritation is experienced, NIOSH approved respiratory protection should be worn. Normally, a NIOSH approved respirator for organic vapours are generally acceptable. For high concentrations and for oxygen-deficient atmospheres, use a NIOSH approved air-supplied respirator. Ventilation and other forms of engineering controls are often the preferred means for controlling chemical exposures. Respiratory protection may be needed for non-routine or emergency situations.
๐ฆบ Skin/Body Protection
Avoid skin contact. When working with this substance, wear appropriate chemical protective gloves. Depending upon conditions of use, additional protection may be necessary such as face shield, apron, armcovers, etc.
